Author bio
Angela M. Sanders writes mysteries with a clear taste for old glamour, offbeat communities, and women who notice more than the people around them realize. She lives in Portland, Oregon, and her books move easily from vintage clothing shops to enchanted libraries, from windy beach towns to rooming houses with a paranormal edge.
Before she turned to fiction, Sanders worked as a congressional investigator, focusing on nuclear waste and natural resource policy. It was serious, far-ranging work, and it took her to some unusual places and conversations. She has described being just as interested in the stray human details around those interviews as in the official subject at hand, the photos on desks, the pushed-aside lunches, the quiet clues about who people were when they were not on the record.
That was the road to fiction.
She also built a nonfiction career alongside it. Sanders has written articles on food, culture, perfume, vintage clothing, and local personalities, and that background shows in the texture of her novels. She tends to be good with objects and atmosphere. A dress label, a bottle of scent, a stack of books, or a small-town storefront does not just decorate the scene in her work. It usually means something.
Her first mystery series centered on Joanna Hayworth, the Portland vintage clothing dealer at the heart of The Lanvin Murders, Dior or Die, and the later Joanna Hayworth books. Those novels mix fashion history, old movie glamour, and murder in a way that feels playful but still grounded. The clothes are not there just for style. They carry secrets, debts, hidden histories, and sometimes the first clue that something is badly wrong.
Sanders later wrote the Oregon coast-set kite shop mysteries under the name Clover Tate, beginning with Blown Away. Then she moved into even more overtly paranormal territory with the Witch Way Librarian novels, starting with Bait and Witch. That series follows Josie Way, a librarian who lands in small-town Oregon, discovers she comes from a line of witches, and learns that books can be surprisingly talkative. More recently, Sanders returned to that larger world with A Whiff of Murder, the opening book in her Sixth Sense series.
She clearly likes a strong hook.
What ties her books together is not one kind of sleuth or one fixed setting, but a way of looking at mystery. Sanders likes communities with hidden rules, women who are practical even when the world gets strange, and crimes that grow out of ordinary places people care about. A library, a clothing shop, a kite festival, or a boarding house can all become the center of danger. Even when magic enters the frame, the stories stay interested in motive, loyalty, and the little tells that reveal character.
These days she writes full-time in Portland. Away from the laptop, she has said she is drawn to vintage crime fiction, perfume, and thrift shops, which feels very much in step with the world of her novels. Her books have room for murder, yes, but also for beautiful old things, peculiar side characters, and the pleasure of following a smart woman as she pieces a life together while solving a crime.
