Series background & context
Angel Fire is Greeley in a more openly fantastic mode. These books take contemporary romance, family intrigue, and spiritual longing, then stir in guardian angels, old secrets, and quests that feel half thriller and half fairy tale. The result is lighter on procedural detail than his mysteries, but it still has the same taste for Chicago Catholics, sharp banter, and ordinary people suddenly discovering that heaven may be paying attention.
The key figure is a very modern angel, Raphaella, who steps into human life with more style and impatience than most celestial messengers. She nudges flawed men toward dangerous tasks, unexpected love, and truths they would rather dodge. In Angel Fire and Angel Light, the stakes are both spiritual and personal. Inheritance fights, family history, troubled romance, and hidden identities matter just as much as the supernatural setup.
These are old-fashioned in a good way.
Greeley is not building a hard-edged fantasy system. He is playing with the idea that grace might arrive wearing good clothes, talking fast, and refusing to leave people alone. Ireland matters a lot, both as place and as imaginative homeland, so the books carry a misty, legendary feeling even when the action is modern.
If you want Greeley at his most playful and unabashedly romantic, this short series is a good bet. Expect guardian-angel intervention, love tested by danger, and a story world where mystery is not something to explain away but something to live with.
