Author bio
Andy Griffiths grew up in Melbourne, Australia, in the 1960s and 70s, in a house where books, comics and records were always lying around. As a kid he filled exercise books with stories, cartoons and home-made magazines for his classmates.
In primary school he discovered the joy of making other people laugh with words and pictures. By high school he was writing for the school magazine, soaking up everything from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Dr Seuss to Roald Dahl, sci-fi comics and MAD magazine.
After finishing school he studied literature at university by day and fronted loud punk and alternative rock bands at night. Songwriting and performing taught him about timing, rhythm and how to hold an audience, even if his singing career was, by his own account, fairly short lived.
Eventually he trained as a high school English teacher. In his first classrooms he was shocked to meet students who thought reading and writing were boring. He noticed, though, that every student loved to laugh, so he began slipping short, funny, slightly outrageous pieces into his lessons to show how much fun playing with language could be.
Those classroom experiments turned into self-published booklets that he sold at markets and to fellow teachers. A few years later a publisher introduced him to illustrator Terry Denton, and the partnership clicked immediately. Together they poured their shared sense of mischief into Just Tricking! in 1997, the first of many books about a boy whose pranks always go one step too far.
Since then Andy and Terry, often working closely with Andy's editor and co-writer Jill Griffiths, have created a long run of children's favourites. The Just series inspired the animated TV show often known as What's with Andy?. The Butt trilogy, beginning with The Day My Butt Went Psycho!, turned runaway bottoms into unlikely action heroes. Their Bad Book collections pushed fairy tales and nursery rhymes to wonderfully wrong extremes.
Their biggest international hit is the Treehouse series, which imagines Andy and Terry living in an ever-expanding, multi-level treehouse packed with shark tanks, marshmallow machines and wildly impractical inventions. These books have sold millions of copies around the world, picked up shelves of children's choice awards and been adapted for sell-out stage productions.
More recently Andy has teamed up with illustrator Bill Hope on the Adventures Unlimited books, beginning with The Land of Lost Things. In these stories the reader is treated as a full character, dragged along on fast, funny quests through strange worlds that feel both dangerous and deeply silly.
Across all of his work Andy is serious about one thing: using laughter to power literacy. He is an ambassador for organisations that support children's reading, and in 2015 he received the Dromkeen Medal for his contribution to Australian children's literature. He visits schools, festivals and theatres, always looking for new ways to show that stories are places to play.
Today he still lives in Melbourne, writing in a studio that is as full of toys and drawings as his fictional treehouse. He believes that silly stories are a perfectly serious way to help kids discover that books can be noisy, anarchic and completely their own.
