Andrey Vasilyev was born on July 31, 1973, and he grew up in Moscow. He has described his early life in very ordinary terms, school, then more school, then work. He studied both education and law, and before readers knew him as a fantasy writer, he spent years working in banking.

Writing came late.

He started making up stories in the summer of 2013, mainly because he had run out of books he wanted to read. That origin story says a lot about him. His fiction often feels like it was built by a reader first, someone who knew exactly what kind of pace, humor, and trouble he wanted on the page.

His breakout title was More Than a Game, the opening novel of Fayroll. In that series, journalist Harriton Nikiforov is sent into a virtual reality game for work and slowly learns that what happens in Fayroll does not stay in Fayroll. The mix of game logic, fantasy adventure, office politics, and real-world danger helped make Vasilyev one of the early Russian names many readers connected with LitRPG.

The books kept coming.

Readers who stay with him usually move quickly from More Than a Game to The Road East and Winds of Fate, where the scale widens and the line between play and real life gets thinner. Later titles like Under the Black Flag show another side of his style, bigger set pieces, stranger corners of the world, and heroes who win as much by timing and nerve as by strength. Even when the quests get huge, he keeps an eye on money, favors, grudges, and the small practical choices that can wreck a plan.

He did not stay only with LitRPG, either. Raven’s Castle, the start of The Raven Disciples, moves into straight secondary-world fantasy. The setup is different, a street thief forced into a new identity and sent to a remote castle to study magic, but the appeal is familiar. Vasilyev still likes resourceful protagonists, layered power games, and worlds where every useful ally seems to come with a catch.

That mix of fantasy and practicality shows up across his work. His main characters are rarely perfect champions who stride in knowing what to do. More often they are workers, opportunists, outsiders, or people who got pulled into something bigger than they expected. They negotiate, improvise, make mistakes, and keep moving. That gives even the larger-than-life parts of his stories a slightly grounded feel.

Away from fiction, he has said he was born in Moscow, was raised there, and still lives there. He is married, has a son, and has been noted as a collector of older adventure and science fiction editions. Those details fit the books. They have plenty of modern genre energy, but they also carry some of the straight-ahead pull of older adventure fiction.

What makes his career especially interesting is how unplanned it sounds. He did not begin as a teenage prodigy or a workshop regular. He was an adult with a job, a backlog of reading, and, eventually, a strong enough itch to start writing the stories he wanted to find. A few years later, that late start had grown into a long list of novels and a loyal readership.
