Series background & context

Samira Ahmed's Amira & Hamza series is a middle-grade fantasy adventure about two Chicago siblings who discover that the universe is much stranger, and much bigger, than they thought. Amira is twelve, science-minded, careful, and happiest when there is a logical explanation. Her younger brother Hamza is impulsive, imaginative, and ready to believe in the impossible long before anyone else is.

Their adventure begins in The War to Save the Worlds during a rare lunar event and an exhibit on medieval Islamic astronomy. When Hamza activates the mysterious Box of the Moon, time seems to stop for everyone around them, a piece of the moon breaks loose, and jinn arrive with alarming news. Amira and Hamza have a part to play in an ancient prophecy.

The siblings are taken to Qaf, a magical realm inhabited by jinn, devs, ghuls, and other beings drawn from Islamic legend. Their task is not a simple treasure hunt. The moon helps hold the boundaries between worlds in place, and its destruction could bring danger to both Qaf and Earth. Amira has doubts about prophecy and magic, while Hamza is thrilled to have been chosen for a real mission. Their different reactions give the books much of their humor and heart.

They bicker like siblings do.

In The Quest for the Ring of Power, Amira and Hamza return from Qaf expecting life to settle down. It does not. A visit to an abandoned castle leads them into another crisis when the powerful dev Ahriman takes Hamza and seeks an ancient ring that could give him control over the worlds. Amira must work through traps, riddles, and a race against time to bring her brother home and stop Ahriman's plan.

The series mixes fast-paced magical quests with ideas from astronomy, history, and Islamic folklore. Chicago matters as more than a starting point, grounding the story in a recognizable family and community before the action leaps into other realms. Ahmed also lets Amira's interest in science sit alongside the fantastic instead of treating the two as enemies. Questions, evidence, and wonder all have a place here.

Expect high-stakes fantasy, sibling comedy, mysterious artifacts, and plenty of creatures with their own agendas. The books are best read in order, beginning with The War to Save the Worlds, because the second adventure builds on the siblings' first trip to Qaf and the relationships they make there.
