Author bio
Amanda Bouchet grew up in New England, where she spent a lot of time tromping through the woods and making up stories in her head. By her own account, it was only a matter of time before she started writing them down.
That mix of wandering, daydreaming, and story-making still feels baked into her books.
When Bouchet put together her debut series, she drew on her Greek heritage for the setting and on her love of adventure and romance for the rest. That became A Promise of Fire, the first Kingmaker novel, and it made a fast impression. The book was a Goodreads Choice Awards top ten finalist for Best Debut, and it was also named an NPR Best Book of 2016.
Readers who start with A Promise of Fire, then move on to Breath of Fire and Heart on Fire, usually come away with a clear sense of what Bouchet likes to do. She writes fast-moving stories with big emotional stakes, strong heroines, dangerous heroes, and enough banter to keep the tension sharp. Even when kingdoms, gods, and magic are in play, the heart of the story stays personal.
She likes epic problems, but she keeps them close to the skin.
Bouchet did not stay in one lane. With Nightchaser and Starbreaker, she moved into space opera romance, following Captain Tess Bailey, Shade Ganavan, and the crew of the Endeavor through a galaxy full of tyrants, rebels, and impossible missions. The setting changed from myth-soaked fantasy to deep space, but the core appeal stayed the same: momentum, chemistry, danger, and characters who have to earn each other's trust the hard way.
Then she returned to fantasy from a new angle. A Curse of Queens and Beneath the Burning Sea reopen the world of Thalyria through new couples and fresh corners of that setting, while The Light Under the Shadow Wing begins a new series built around dragon shifters, phoenix riders, and kingdoms on the edge of war. Across those books, Bouchet keeps coming back to hidden identity, dangerous power, loyalty under pressure, and love that can feel like both a weakness and a lifeline.
She writes the kinds of books that want movement.
Bouchet has said she writes what she loves to read: epic exploits, steamy romance, and characters who can make readers laugh and cry. That description fits. Her stories tend to be full of travel, rescue attempts, shifting alliances, magical trouble, and people who would really prefer not to admit how much they care until the stakes are already sky high.
Her first novel's early success also helped define the path that followed. Bouchet is now known for writing fantasy romance and space opera romance, and her books show how comfortably she moves between the two. Whether she is working with gods, dragons, or spaceships, she keeps the focus on connection, pressure, and the push-pull between duty and desire.
She now lives in Paris, France, with her two kids, two cats, and, as she has put it, a regular dose of fluffy, buttery croissants. It is a small detail, but it suits her work. Her books like big scale and high stakes, but they also leave room for warmth, humor, and pleasure.
