The First Journey
by Katherine KA Applegate
1999
You become a new Animorph recruit just as the Yeerk invasion threatens to close in. Choose your morphs and missions carefully, because every decision can lead to escape, disaster, or a very strange ending.
The Next Passage
by Katherine KA Applegate
2000
The interactive Animorphs adventure continues with fresh paths through the secret war. You decide whom to trust, which animal to become, and how to survive when the Yeerks are always one choice behind you.
Series background & context
Alternamorphs takes the central idea of Animorphs and turns it into an interactive adventure. Instead of following Jake, Rachel, Cassie, Marco, Tobias, or Ax, the reader becomes a new recruit with the ability to morph. Each choice changes the route through the story.
That means these books work differently from the main series. You pick missions, decide which animal forms to use, and live with the result when a plan goes wrong. Some paths bring you close to the Animorphs' secret war against the Yeerks. Others end quickly, badly, or in ways that are darkly funny.
The two-hour limit still matters.
The First Journey introduces the setup and asks readers to survive their first encounters with the invasion. The Next Passage raises the stakes with another set of branching choices. Both books use familiar places, alien enemies, morphing risks, and the uneasy feeling that anyone around you could be controlled by a Yeerk.
Because the stories branch, they are not part of the fixed continuity in the same way as the numbered novels. There is no single correct path through each book, and the reader character does not replace the core team. That is part of the fun. You can try a bold choice, get caught, turn back to an earlier page, and see what happens when you take a different approach.
The tone is lighter and more game-like, but the world is recognizably Animorphs. Animal instincts can complicate a decision. A bad morph can leave you exposed. Trust is always risky when the enemy can hide in human hosts.
These are detours, not required stops.
Readers who want the main story should begin with The Invasion and follow the regular books. Readers who want to play inside the world for an afternoon can start here, then revisit the books to explore the paths they missed.
