Series background & context

Jennifer Rush's Altered series is a young adult science-fiction thriller about memory, identity, and the danger of being treated like an experiment instead of a person. It begins with a hidden laboratory beneath a farmhouse, then quickly becomes a story of escape, pursuit, and piecing together a past that powerful people have worked hard to erase.

Anna Moray is at the center of the series. Her father works for the Branch, a secretive organization running experiments on four genetically altered boys, Sam, Nick, Cas, and Trev. Anna knows them as part of her strange everyday life, especially Sam, but she does not know the full truth about why they are there or what was done to them before they arrived.

When the Branch moves to take the boys away, Sam leads an escape and Anna is forced to decide whether to stay with the only life she knows or run with them. Her father's warning makes the choice clear, but not easy. On the road, Anna and the boys have to avoid Branch operatives while following scattered clues about their real names, families, and histories.

Nobody has the full picture.

The series gets much of its tension from that uncertainty. Sam is protective and controlled, Nick carries the weight of memories he cannot fully reach, Cas brings a more playful edge, and Trev's position becomes increasingly complicated. Anna is not simply along for the ride. As her own memories begin to surface, she has to reconsider her father, the Branch, and her connection to Sam.

The three main novels, Altered, Erased, and Reborn, carry the central storyline forward. They combine chase scenes and conspiracies with a romance that is tested by secrets, trauma, and incomplete memories. The stakes are personal as well as physical. Finding out who someone was can change who they believe they are now.

Three short companion stories widen the view. Forged looks back to Dani O'Brien and Sam's early time inside the Branch. Betrayed follows Trev after he is separated from the group and sent on a Branch mission. Played turns to Chloe, another altered subject whose pursuit of revenge brings her close to the organization's leadership. These novellas are useful for readers who want more context around the people moving at the edges of the main plot.

Expect a quick, tense read with a near-contemporary setting, secret programs, altered bodies, and relationships that are never as simple as they first appear. The series asks its characters to keep moving even when the truth is painful, incomplete, or possibly another trap.
