Author bio

Alix E. Harrow grew up outside Bowling Green, Kentucky, and the shape of that place still lingers around her work. She was the kind of rural kid who read portal fantasies and wondered what might be waiting on the other side of an ordinary door. Long before the novels, books were already the fixed point.

History came first.

Harrow graduated from Berea College at nineteen with a history degree, then earned a master’s degree in history from the University of Vermont, where she studied empire and environment. After that came a string of jobs and detours. She harvested blueberries in Maine, worked as a Tractor Supply cashier, lived in a van for a while, and later taught as an adjunct professor at Eastern Kentucky University.

That mix of scholarship and scruffy real life helps explain her fiction. In interviews, Harrow has talked about loving classic portal fantasies as a child, then later asking harder questions about the power hidden inside them. In grad school she began thinking seriously about empire, race, home, and the stories children are taught to love. Those questions eventually opened into The Ten Thousand Doors of January.

The short fiction came first, and it mattered.

Stories in magazines like Shimmer, Strange Horizons, Apex, and Tor helped put her on the map, and A Witch’s Guide to Escape: A Practical Compendium of Portal Fantasies won the Hugo Award for Best Short Story. She has said that an editor reached out after one of those stories and asked if she had anything novel-length. She did, and that stretch of good timing helped turn her from an adjunct with a manuscript into a novelist with a debut.

Readers often meet her through The Ten Thousand Doors of January, a book about hidden worlds, family secrets, and the ache of wanting a bigger life. From there, many move to The Once and Future Witches, which brings together suffrage, sisterhood, and old magic in 1893 New Salem. A Spindle Splintered and A Mirror Mended show her playful side, taking apart Sleeping Beauty and Snow White with wit, anger, and affection. Starling House leans gothic, with a haunted Kentucky mansion and a heroine trying to get her brother out of a bad-luck town. The Everlasting reaches toward legend and time travel, asking what happens when history turns a person into a story.

She writes about stories, but never forgets the people trapped inside them.

That is probably the thread running through all her work. She returns again and again to fairy tales, folklore, women pushed to the margins, and the ways power hides inside official history. Even when the setting is full of doors, witches, saints, or haunted houses, the emotional problems stay very human: grief, class, family, loyalty, love, and the hard question of whether a person can choose a different ending.

Harrow is now a full-time writer. A former Kentuckian, she lives in Virginia with her husband and their two children, and she keeps building books that care just as much about myth and language as they do about ordinary people trying to make a life inside unruly worlds.
