Alison Ragsdale Books in Order

Alison Ragsdale was born in Edinburgh, and Scotland has stayed at the center of her fiction ever since. Many of her novels are set in the Highlands and islands, with landscapes that matter as much as the people do. She writes about family, loss, love, and self-discovery in a way that keeps the drama rooted in everyday life.

Her route to writing was not a straight line. She trained as a professional ballet dancer and spent years working in dance before an injury forced a change. After that she built a second career as a marketing executive, earned an MBA from the University of Leicester, and later started her own health-services business.

Writing waited in the wings.

As a child, while her family moved around the world, books and writing were the steady things she could count on. She has said that Laura Ingalls Wilder was one of her early inspirations. She wrote little adventure stories on lined paper and tied the pages together with string, which feels like a very fitting beginning for a novelist.

The real turning point came much later. After more than two decades of moving between countries and careers, she found that running her own business was taking too much out of her. With encouragement from her husband, she stepped away and finally gave serious time to the dream she had carried for years. In 2014 she took the leap and published Tuesday's Socks, a warm, quietly funny novel about Jeffrey Mere, a cautious sixty-four-year-old whose life changes after one bold decision.

That first book was followed the same year by The Father-Daughter Club, a family story set partly in Greece and Italy that went on to win an IPPY Bronze medal for Best Regional Fiction, Europe. Then came Finding Heather, about a young widow returning to the Isle of Skye, and A Life Unexpected, which explores adoption, buried secrets, and the strain that truth can put on a marriage. A Life Unexpected also won an IPPY Bronze medal, this time in Popular Fiction. These books show what Ragsdale does especially well: she gives big emotional problems to ordinary people and lets the consequences unfold with patience and heart.

She kept stretching from there. The Art of Remembering follows a ballerina trying to piece together her life after surgery leaves her memory fractured, while Dignity and Grace sends a young cellist back through her mother's past and toward Orkney. In 2020 she also published The Liar and other stories, her first short story collection, proof that her interest in family tension and small turning points works just as well in shorter form.

Family is her home ground.

Her later books lean even more fully into difficult choices around motherhood and belonging. Her Last Chance, Someone Else's Child, The Child Between Us, An Impossible Choice, My Husband's Child, and My Sister's Only Hope all circle questions that sound simple until life makes them impossible: who gets to be called a mother, what do we owe the people we love, and how much can a family survive once secrets come out.

Today, after living and working in eight countries, Ragsdale has settled near Washington, D.C., with her husband and dog. She still writes with Scotland close at hand, even from far away. That mix of distance and attachment helps explain why her books feel so rooted in place.
