Author bio

Alison James grew up in the Cotswolds but spent much of her childhood living abroad, moving between countries and schools before coming back to the UK for university. Those early years gave her a fascination with people, places and the way secrets travel between them.

At Oxford she studied languages, immersing herself in how words work and how stories shift in translation. After graduating she went into journalism, learning how to ask difficult questions, file fast copy and notice the tiny details that reveal a bigger story.

For a time she combined journalism with other writing jobs, from features to commissioned work, but the pull toward narrative never really went away. Crime fiction, which she had loved since her teens, was always the section of the bookshop she drifted back to.

After having two children she changed direction again, returning to university to study law. She went on to spend three years as a paralegal in the criminal justice system, working on cases involving fraud, sexual assault and murder. The job brought her into daily contact with detectives, witnesses and defendants, and showed her how messy and human real investigations can be.

That experience turned out to be the missing piece. Leaving the law, she worked as a commercial copywriter and then as a television storyliner, helping to plot long running drama series. The discipline of breaking stories into scenes and beats, and always asking what would keep a viewer watching, fed directly into the way she builds her novels.

Her first crime series introduced Detective Rachel Prince in Lola Is Missing (originally published as The Lying Kind), followed quickly by Now She's Gone and Perfect Girls. Set within British policing but often spilling across borders, the books follow Rachel and her colleague Mark Brickall as they tackle high profile cases involving missing children, international students and young women targeted by predators.

Alongside the police procedurals, James writes psychological and domestic suspense. Standalone novels such as The Friendship Pact, Her Sister's Child, The Guilty Wife and The New Couple focus on marriages under strain, complicated female friendships and families hiding dangerous truths. Later books like The Woman in Carriage 3, The House Guest, Just the Nicest Family and The Good Neighbour push ordinary people into frightening situations where one bad decision has lasting consequences.

Her work has reached bestseller lists in the UK, the United States and Australia, and Now She's Gone was nominated for the McIlvanney Prize for Scottish crime writing. Readers come to her books for the twists, but stay for the grounded detectives, flawed families and the sense that crime can unfold in apparently safe places.

These days she draws on all of her previous jobs when she writes, from the fact gathering habits of a reporter to the legal detail of a paralegal and the pacing she learned in television. She still reads widely in crime and thriller fiction, and enjoys building stories that feel like a conversation with fellow fans of the genre.
