Author bio
Aliette de Bodard was born in the United States, grew up in Paris, and has built a body of speculative fiction that carries French and Vietnamese influences into fantasy, space opera, and mystery. She writes in English, even though French is her first language, and that blend of languages and backgrounds shows up all through her work. She still lives and works in Paris.
Books came first.
She has said that she was an avid reader long before she was a serious writer, with a taste for mythology, history, and detective fiction. While living in London as a teenager, writing in English felt natural because it was the language she was reading in every day. She wrote a couple of early novels, learned a lot from them, and then, around 2004 and 2005, began to take the craft much more seriously. She joined a critique group, turned to short stories as a way to improve fast, and started submitting professionally.
That practical streak never really left.
De Bodard studied computer science and applied mathematics, and she has worked as an engineer and system architect alongside her fiction career. You can feel some of that training in her books. Even when the setting includes fallen angels, dragon courts, or sentient starships, the worlds tend to feel built rather than sketched. Institutions matter. Infrastructure matters. Small rules matter. People still have jobs to do, and those jobs shape the story.
Her first novel, Servant of the Underworld, arrived in 2010 and introduced Acatl, a priest of the dead in Tenochtitlan who ends up investigating crimes that threaten both the state and the balance between the living and the dead. That trilogy, completed by Harbinger of the Storm and Master of the House of Darts, gave readers something fantasy does not offer often enough, a murder mystery structure inside an Aztec inspired world that feels specific, tense, and lived in.
A lot of readers know her best through Xuya, her far future setting where scholars govern habitats and sentient ships are part of family lineages. On a Red Station, Drifting helped establish that universe, and later books like The Tea Master and the Detective, Seven of Infinities, and The Red Scholar’s Wake show how flexible it is. One story might be a family and station drama, another a Holmes inspired mystery, another a pirate romance. What links them is the texture: tea, food, obligation, grief, class tension, and the constant push and pull between duty and desire.
Then there is Paris.
In The House of Shattered Wings and the rest of the Dominion of the Fallen books, de Bodard turns the city into a wrecked Gothic landscape of fallen angels, dragons, magicians, and survivors trying to make a life in the ruins of a magical war. In shorter books like Fireheart Tiger and In the Vanishers’ Palace, she shifts again, toward romance forward fantasy that still keeps her usual interests close at hand: power, memory, colonial pressure, tenderness, and the danger of systems that ask too much from the people inside them.
Across all of this work, certain things keep coming back. Families, chosen and inherited. People caught between cultures or loyalties. Scholars, engineers, magistrates, priests, and ships who think like people. Queer relationships treated as part of the fabric of the world, not as an exception to it. Her stories can be dark, but they are rarely cold. Even at their bleakest, they care about what it costs to remain kind.
These days she is still based in Paris, where she balances fiction with work and family life. She has also shared a love of tea, cooking, watercolor, and Franco Vietnamese food, which makes perfect sense once you have read even a handful of her books. The meals are rarely filler. In an Aliette de Bodard story, what people eat, what they serve, and who gets fed usually tells you something important.
