Alicia Jones is one of Harrison's most science-fiction-forward series, and Alicia herself is a big part of why it works. The first book describes her as a genius and a little odd, which is a strong promise for the kind of lead she will be, brilliant, unusual, and central to problems that quickly outgrow everyday life.
The series starts with First Contact, so alien discovery is baked into the foundation.
