Author bio

Alice Schertle was born in Los Angeles in 1941, and books were part of her life early. She has said that childhood reading shaped the way she remembers growing up, and that sense of wonder never really left her. Long before she published anything, she was already the sort of kid who read in odd corners and tried to write stories of her own.

She stayed close to that love of language as an adult. Schertle studied at the University of Southern California and later at UCLA, where she worked with the children's poet Myra Cohn Livingston. For a time she taught elementary school in Inglewood, California, which gave her a clear view of how children listen, speak, worry, joke, and latch onto rhythm.

Then life got busy.

After college she married, started a family, and stepped away from teaching to raise her children. She returned to writing in the mid 1970s, once her kids were old enough to give her a little room to think. Her first children's book, The Gorilla in the Hall, appeared in 1977, and from there she built a long career that moved easily between picture books and poetry.

That range is part of what makes her bibliography fun to explore. Many readers know her best for Little Blue Truck, the rhyming picture book about a friendly truck whose kindness helps bring a whole farmyard together. It grew into a hugely popular series, but it also shows several of Schertle's favorite strengths at once: a strong read aloud beat, a warm sense of community, and language children want to join in with.

Her work goes well beyond Blue and his barnyard friends. Down the Road turns a small errand, carrying eggs home from the store, into a child sized test of responsibility. All You Need for a Snowman takes a simple winter activity and turns it into a joyful chain of steps and shared effort. In Button Up!: Wrinkled Rhymes, pieces of clothing get their own voices, and the poems feel playful without talking down to the reader.

She is also a poet in the clearest sense of the word. Books like How Now, Brown Cow?, Advice for a Frog, and I Am the Cat show how much she enjoys sound, point of view, and close observation.
