Joel Goldman’s Alex Stone series follows a public defender who believes every person deserves a real defense, even when the evidence is ugly and the client is hard to like. Alex Stone works with people who cannot afford private counsel, and she knows many of her cases look hopeless from the start. That does not make her quit. It makes her dig in.

The series begins with Stone Cold. Alex successfully defends Dwayne Reed, who is charged with murdering another drug dealer. The acquittal should be a win, at least on paper. Instead, Alex fears Reed will take revenge on people connected to the case, including a family whose testimony damaged him. When he threatens Alex’s partner, Dr. Bonnie Long, the line between defending the accused and protecting the innocent becomes painfully hard to hold.

That conflict defines Alex. She cares about due process and understands that courts can get things wrong, but she cannot shake the guilt when someone she helped defend may hurt others. She is smart, physically tough, and stubborn enough to keep going when a prosecutor, judge, or police officer would prefer that she back down. Her decisions are not always neat, and that is what gives the books their tension.

In Chasing The Dead, Alex is appointed to represent a homeless veteran who has confessed to the rape and murder of a prostitute. The confession appears to make the case simple. Alex does not believe it. As pressure mounts to move the case quickly toward death row, she has to find out whether the man is being used to cover a larger crime, while protecting her career and her life.

The setting is Kansas City, and the legal system is central to the action, but these are not quiet courtroom puzzles. The cases spill into dangerous places, personal relationships, and moral territory where there is no risk-free choice. The tone is tense and direct, with an ongoing question underneath the action: what does someone do after the system’s version of justice proves inadequate?

Read Stone Cold first. It establishes Alex, Bonnie, and the personal cost of her work. Chasing The Dead builds on that foundation and puts Alex under even greater pressure. The series is a good fit for readers who want legal thrillers led by a principled character who is willing to question her own side.
