Author bio

Alex Lidell writes fantasy and romance with fast plots, dangerous training grounds, and heroines who usually have to earn every bit of authority they get. Whether she is writing about fae courts, naval battles, reform academies, or former special operators back home, her stories tend to move with the same brisk, high-stakes energy.

She was born in Russia and learned English in elementary school. One early turning point came when a librarian handed her Tamora Pierce's Alanna, the first English-language novel she read for fun. It also became the book she credits with starting her lifelong love of fantasy, especially fantasy with girls who fight for their place.

That detail explains a lot.

Lidell's debut novel, The Cadet of Tildor, was a finalist in the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award and was published by Penguin in 2013. It is a young adult fantasy about a cadet trying to survive an elite military academy while her kingdom slips toward unrest. Even that early, you can see several of the things Lidell comes back to again and again: command structures, loyalty under pressure, morally messy choices, and young women trying to prove themselves in systems not built for them.

After that, she expanded into indie fantasy romance and romantasy, and that is where many readers first found her. Air and Ash and the rest of the Tides books lean into maritime fantasy, with Princess Nile Greysik chasing command at sea while war and forbidden magic close in around her. Power of Five takes a different route, throwing a mortal stable girl into the orbit of four fae warriors after an ancient bond chooses her as their missing fifth. Readers who like training arcs, found family, and tension-heavy group dynamics tend to have a good time there.

She likes teams, tension, and people who have to learn command the hard way.

That carries into later series too. Last Chance Academy and the Immortals of Talonswood books go darker, building around a brutal reform school full of witches, fae, vampires, and old grudges that refuse to stay buried. Her dragon-centered books, including Her Royal Dragon Pack and Fated to the Draken Riders, stay in the romantasy lane but keep the same interest in power, duty, and messy loyalties. Even when the magic gets bigger, the emotional core stays practical: who can you trust, what are you willing to risk, and what happens when love shows up in the middle of a war or a mission.

Lidell also writes contemporary romantic suspense as A.L. Lidell. In books like Enemy Zone and the rest of the Trident Rescue series, she swaps fae politics for Denton Valley, Colorado, where former Navy SEALs build a rescue and security company and then discover that emotional baggage does not stay politely in the background. The settings change, but the appeal is familiar. Competent people. Pressure. Banter. Wounds that need more than one kind of healing.

Across all of her work, readers usually know what they are getting in the best sense. Strong heroines who are not instantly unstoppable. Men with histories. Institutions that can be useful and cruel at the same time. Romance that has to grow while something larger is on the line. Her books are not interested in standing still for long.

She also writes as A.L. Lidell.

Outside the page, she has described herself as an avid horseback rider, a bad hockey player, and someone who believes in dessert first. She lives in Washington, DC, and that feels oddly fitting for a writer who clearly enjoys power struggles, sharp loyalties, and characters trying to keep their balance while everything around them gets complicated.
