Series background & context

Alex Duggins marks Stella Cameron's move into traditional mystery, and it suits her. Alex returns to her Cotswolds home village of Folly-on-Weir after her marriage breaks down, only to discover that quiet English villages are rarely as quiet as they look.

Alex is not a detective. She is a pub owner with local roots, a stubborn streak, and a habit of noticing things she probably ought to leave alone. That makes her a strong guide through the series. She knows the village history, the people, the gossip, and the grudges, and all of that matters when murder turns up.

Tony Harrison, the local veterinarian, becomes one of the key figures around her, and the surrounding cast gives the books their real texture. Children, pub regulars, neighbors, and newcomers all have their place in the puzzle. Cameron is very good at showing how one death can disturb an entire community.

These are cozy-adjacent village mysteries with a darker undercurrent. If you want atmosphere, layered local history, and a heroine who feels rooted in her world, Alex Duggins is an excellent place to begin.
