Series background & context
The Alex Craft novels are urban fantasy mysteries set in Nekros City, where grave witch Alex Craft makes a living as a private investigator and police consultant. Alex can raise shades, temporary echoes of the dead, and ask them questions that living witnesses cannot answer. It is a useful gift for murder investigations. It is also dangerous magic, and every use comes with a personal cost.
The series opens with Grave Witch, when Alex is called in on a high-profile murder and the shade she raises attacks her. The case puts her alongside Falin Andrews, a guarded investigator with ties to Faerie, and keeps drawing the attention of Death, who is far more involved in Alex's life than she would prefer. The early books balance crime-solving with Alex's struggle to stay independent, solvent, and alive.
Nekros City matters because it is not a world hidden from the supernatural. Magic has shaped public life, but knowing supernatural creatures exist does not make dealing with them simpler. Alex has to navigate ghosts, necromancers, fae glamour, human authorities, and the rules of otherworldly courts. A case might begin with a body in the city and end with a problem nobody in the human world can solve.
The mysteries get bigger.
As the series continues through Grave Dance, Grave Memory, and Grave Visions, Alex learns more about her own unusual heritage and power. Her connections to Faerie become impossible to ignore. That puts pressure on every part of her life, including her work, her friendships, and her complicated feelings for Falin and Death. The romantic threads are ongoing, but the books remain centered on investigation, magic, and consequences.
Later novels, including Grave Ransom and Grave Destiny, expand the story into fae politics. Alex is still a practical investigator at heart, but she is no longer able to treat Faerie as someone else's problem. Alliances shift, old court rivalries flare up, and seemingly isolated deaths can threaten both the fae and human worlds.
Grave War brings the main Alex Craft story to a high-stakes close, with Alex taking on a formal investigative role as conflict between worlds threatens to spill outward. The tone throughout is dark but lively, with creepy magic, sharp banter, and cases that reward readers who enjoy watching clues come together. Start with Grave Witch, since Alex's powers, key relationships, and the larger arc all build from that first investigation.
