The center of the story is Galan Faraday, a man with one foot in the practical world and the other in a hidden magical one. Swain still keeps the pacing brisk, but the mood is a little sharper and more intense than in her more openly comic books.

If you like your fantasy with guild intrigue, moral pressure, and a protagonist who has to think as hard as he fights, this is a strong branch of her work. Start with Flask of the Master and let the story get stranger from there.
