Inkpot Gods

by Seanan McGuire

2026

More than a century after Asphodel Baker reshaped the world, her legacy is still poisoning the present. The fourth Alchemical Journeys book turns toward inheritance, reckoning, and the cost of creation.

Series background & context

The Alchemical Journeys books are Seanan McGuire in her most reality-bending mode, but they are still built on character before concept. The series begins with Middlegame, where Roger understands the world through language and Dodger understands it through math. They are not ordinary children, although they have been raised to think they might be. They are part of an alchemical design aimed at something much larger and much more dangerous.

That danger keeps widening.

McGuire uses alchemy here less as old laboratory imagery and more as a way of thinking about systems, patterns, creation, and the human desire to force meaning onto reality. Middlegame is the foundation, but later books like Seasonal Fears, Tidal Creatures, and Inkpot Gods show that the setting is bigger than one pair of almost-twins. Natural concepts, impossible cities, inherited mistakes, and godlike power all begin pressing in from different directions.

For all the scale, the series does not feel abstract. McGuire is interested in what huge metaphysical structures do to very specific people. Love, grief, obligation, and unintended consequences keep the books from floating away into pure idea-fiction. Even the strangest turns usually come back to someone trying to protect another person, or trying to undo damage that should never have been done.

It gets weird.

That is part of the appeal, and so is the way the books connect to The Up-and-Under. Those A. Deborah Baker portal fantasies are literally books inside this universe, which means Alchemical Journeys can move between myth, metafiction, and emotional fantasy without feeling like it has switched projects.

So this page is best for readers who want Seanan McGuire at her most ambitious and structurally playful. Start with Middlegame. Everything else grows from there, even when it seems to be headed somewhere completely different.
