Series background & context

Aisling Grimlock is entering the family business, and the family business is death. The Grimlocks are grim reapers, surrounded by alpha men, messy loyalties, and supernatural responsibilities that do not leave much room for a quiet life.

Grim Tidings starts Aisling's story as she learns what her role means and faces the kind of danger that comes with guiding the dead. Her relatives are protective, demanding, and often frustrating. Their dynamic gives the series much of its humor, even when the cases become serious.

Aisling does not get to work alone for long.

The books combine paranormal mystery, family comedy, romance, and an ongoing supernatural arc. Aisling's relationship with Griffin develops alongside the larger threats, while her brothers and other relatives make nearly every situation more complicated. The series has a set overall story, so reading in order is important.

After the main novels, the Grim Family Tales shorts give supporting Grimlocks time in the spotlight. The characters also continue to matter in related series, especially the Death Gate books. Begin with Grim Tidings and save the short fiction until after the main arc, when its character moments will land best.
