Series background & context

Against All Expectations is a loose collection of stand‑alone historical novels that follow women who are told exactly who they should be—and quietly begin to question those rules. Each book drops you into a different era, from the glitter of royal courts to the austerity of Puritan New England and the swirl of Gilded Age society.

A Constant Heart opens the sequence in Elizabethan England. Marget Barnardsen, the daughter of a knight, marries the Earl of Lytham and steps straight into the dangerous theatrics of Queen Elizabeth’s court. Beauty and favor are supposed to guarantee her future, yet one misstep with the queen threatens both her marriage and her safety. The story lingers in the backstage spaces of power: dressing rooms, whispered conversations, and the private bargains made to survive a jealous monarch.

In Love's Pursuit, the stage shifts to a tiny Puritan town in 1640s Massachusetts. Susannah Phillips has done everything right in a community that measures virtue by rules, routines, and plain living. When she catches the eye of the town’s wealthiest bachelor and a roguish military captain sent to protect them, her tidy plans begin to unravel. An overlooked, wounded woman becomes her unlikely guide, forcing Susannah to weigh the cost of love and the difference between outward piety and inner grace.

She Walks in Beauty carries the theme into 1890s New York, at the height of the social season. Clara Carter is trained like an athlete for her debut: hours of dance lessons, language tutors, and brutal corset fittings, all aimed at securing the city’s most eligible bachelor. As gossip turns vicious and her closest friendships are tested, Clara has to decide whether the future mapped out for her is worth the price of her health, her integrity, and her heart.

Though the plots and time periods are very different, the books share a common thread. Each heroine begins inside a system—court etiquette, church discipline, high society—that promises security if she will only conform. Across the series, those promises prove fragile. Love does not always follow approved paths, faith cannot be reduced to rules, and real worth is rarely the same as social status.

Readers who enjoy immersive historical detail will find plenty here: glimpses of Elizabethan pageantry, the harsh discipline and tight‑knit families of colonial New England, and the dazzling yet suffocating ballrooms of America’s upper class. The tone leans more thoughtful than fluffy; romance is important, but so are questions about conscience, sacrifice, and what it means to belong.

Because the stories are only connected by theme, not by continuing characters, you can pick up any title on its own. Reading them together, though, highlights how expectations placed on women shift—and how the struggle to live honestly and love well remains much the same, no matter the century.
