The Adventures of Errol Amberdane sit on the more bookish side of Robyn Wideman's fantasy worlds. Errol is the son of famous people, which should make him seem larger than life, but the appeal of the story is that he does not feel that way at all. He would rather spend time in the Great Library of Silvermire than stride into battle looking for glory.

That quiet preference gets tested in Dark Soul Sword. A teacher pulls Errol into a secret mission to destroy Ebonreaver, a dangerous dark blade, and suddenly the things that make him different become the very reasons he matters. His library access, curiosity, and feel for hidden knowledge are not side details. They are the point.

This is teen sword-and-sorcery with a school-story rhythm. There are classes, rivalries, and the feeling that young characters are learning what kind of people they want to become while the stakes keep rising around them. Errol's lizard companion Baxter adds some charm, and the whole setup balances artifact-quest danger with a lighter, more personal sense of adventure.

If you like fantasy where brains matter as much as brawn, this series is a nice fit. It has the pace of a quest story, but the heart of it is Errol himself, a boy trying to live with a heavy family reputation while stepping into problems only he can solve.
