Series background & context
The Addison Holmes books are light, funny mysteries set in Whiskey Bayou, Georgia. Addison begins the series as a history teacher whose routine life changes abruptly when she finds her principal dead outside a gentleman's club. Losing her job is bad enough. Becoming involved in a murder investigation makes it much worse.
Fortunately, Addison has an eye for people, a tendency to ask questions, and very little instinct for staying out of trouble.
Her best friend Kate runs a detective agency, which gives Addison a way into investigative work. Detective Nick Foresythe is often nearby too, whether she wants his help or not. Their uneasy chemistry and Addison's loud, loving family add a romantic-comedy current to cases that can otherwise get surprisingly serious.
The books work as small-town amateur-sleuth stories. Each mystery has its own crime, suspects, and local gossip, while Addison's relationships develop across the series. Whiskey Bayou matters because everyone knows everyone, or believes they do. That makes it a useful place to find a witness, but it also means old grudges and private mistakes travel fast.
Expect quick pacing, sarcastic observations, chaotic relatives, romantic tension, and a heroine who is often one bad decision away from another mess. Addison is not a polished professional detective. She is curious, stubborn, and prone to charging ahead when common sense suggests taking a step back.
Start with Whiskey Rebellion. It introduces Addison, Kate, Nick, and the tone of the series, then later books build on the friendships and romantic complications established there.
