Series background & context
Adams Grove is Nancy Naigle’s small-town Virginia series, and it sets the pattern for much of her later work. The books mix contemporary romance with light romantic suspense, family history, and a town where everyone has an opinion because everyone knows your business.
The first book, Sweet Tea and Secrets, begins after beloved Pearl Clemmons dies. Pearl’s granddaughter Jill comes home to settle the estate and face Garrett Malloy, the man who once broke her heart. Break-ins at the Clemmons house make the homecoming dangerous, and Pearl’s past turns out to hold more than memories.
That blend of romance and trouble carries through the series.
Out of Focus follows photographer Kasey Phillips after a terrible accident, a hurricane threat, and the disappearance of her young son. Later books bring back familiar names and introduce new problems, including wedding-day murder, a country star accused of killing his agent, stalking danger, and a barbecue-centered mystery that pulls the town together again.
Adams Grove feels warm, but it is not sleepy. Naigle uses the town as a pressure cooker. Old relationships, family shame, secrets, grief, and gossip all rise to the surface when something goes wrong. The romances are usually tied to healing, trust, and the hard work of letting another person back in.
Start with Sweet Tea and Secrets. The books can often be followed on their own, but the emotional payoff is better in order because characters return, couples reappear, and the town’s social web becomes part of the fun. If you like romance with a mystery thread and a strong Southern community feel, Adams Grove is the natural starting place.
