Acid Vanilla Books in Order

Acid Vanilla is Matthew Hattersley's main action-thriller series, and it knows exactly what it is. These are fast, violent books about a woman trained to kill, but they are also about what happens after that training stops making sense.

The prequel, Making a Killer, shows the early life of Alice Vandella, a girl pushed through institutions that fail her and people who want to use her. By the time the main series opens in The Watcher, she is known as Acid Vanilla, an elite assassin working for Annihilation Pest Control. One job in Paris changes everything. Sent to kill hacker Spook Horowitz, Acid learns something that connects the target to her own past, refuses to take the shot, and turns herself into prey.

Spook matters.

From there the books run on two connected tracks. One is survival. Acid has former employers, rival killers, criminal bosses, and old ghosts on her back from the start. The other is something harder to name, a fight over who she wants to be when she is no longer just taking orders. That is why revenge powers Seven Bullets, why The Hunt turns into a brutal game of predator and prey, and why Sister Death and Exit Wounds keep forcing her to choose between old instincts and new loyalties.

The settings help give the series its charge. Hattersley moves Acid through Paris, Hanoi, San Sebastian, Iran, Montana, Hollywood, and beyond, and each place feels like a pressure cooker rather than a postcard. The books have the pace of action cinema, but the ongoing story is more personal than that. Acid is not just trying to stay alive. She is trying to make sense of her mother's murder, her own violent past, and the people who keep getting close enough to matter.

That is where Spook becomes central, and later books deepen that push and pull. In Never Say Die and I Am A Killer, Acid is no longer only running or taking revenge. She starts drifting toward the role of problem-solver, protector, and sometimes avenging angel, even if she is still far too comfortable with bloodshed. By the time you get to Fallen Angels and Born Savage, the series is also asking what loyalty looks like when family, business, and survival all point in different directions.

It is loud, bloody, and surprisingly funny.

What makes the series work is that Acid is never cleaned up into a simple hero. She is sharp, damaged, impulsive, and often brutally effective, but she is also capable of doubt, tenderness, and very bad choices. If you like assassin thrillers with global action, dark humor, and a lead character who keeps trying to outrun herself, this is the lane. The books can function as individual missions, but read in order they build a bigger story about trauma, revenge, and the uneasy possibility of redemption.
