Now You See Me

by Debbie Viguie

2017

After too much loss, Opal Grant moves across the country to live with her aunt and start over. Instead she meets Malachi Hart and discovers a world where magic is real, enemies are close, and she may be part of it all.

Series background & context

Abracadabra starts in familiar YA territory and then tilts hard into magic. Opal Grant has already lost too much by the time Now You See Me begins, and her move across the country to stay with her aunt is supposed to be a reset. Instead, it drops her into a house full of family history and a world she barely understands.

Then there is Malachi Hart. He is the classic dangerous boy setup, but the books do not stop there. Through Mal, Opal learns that magic is real, rivalries are deadly, and she may be more tied to this hidden world than she ever guessed. That blend of attraction, fear, and self-discovery drives the series.

The tone here is urban fantasy with a strong romantic pull. There are secret powers, hidden enemies, and shifting loyalties, but the emotional engine is Opal trying to make sense of who she is and what she is willing to risk. The magic is not decorative. It changes relationships and raises the cost of every choice.

One nice thing about the series is that it keeps the supernatural danger personal. Opal is not just watching magic happen from the outside. She gets pulled into it, and that makes the stakes feel immediate.

If you like YA stories where a move to a new home turns into a plunge into hidden power and hidden danger, Abracadabra is a good fit. Start with Now You See Me.
