Series background & context

A Whisper in the Dark is one of the darker strands in Feener's shared sci-fi universe, but it has a very different feel from the college books. The trilogy centers on Hunter Thorn, who is already on the run when the story begins. He has crossed the wrong mafia leaders, he is living with the fear of being found, and the planet around him, Sanctum, is not built to make survival easy.

Sanctum matters a lot.

It is a world shaped by elemental power and hard rule, with an Emperor more interested in himself than in protecting the people beneath him. That lets Feener blend personal danger with political atmosphere. Hunter is not only trying to stay alive. He is doing it in a place where power is constantly visible, constantly uneven, and often violent.

Because this is a trilogy, the books track the fallout closely. You Will Never Know, Don't Breathe a Word, and Don't Let Me Go all build on the same central emotional mess. Secrets come out. Running stops working. The person Hunter falls for becomes part of the problem as much as the solution. Feener uses that structure to deepen the relationship rather than resetting it every book.

This page is a good choice if you want her sci-fi darker, more enclosed, and more driven by one ongoing bond than by a chain of standalones. Expect fear, hidden history, criminal pressure, and a romance that only gets riskier once it turns real.
