A Twisted Tale (Jen Calonita) Books in Order

Jen Calonita's A Twisted Tale books take familiar Disney stories and crack open one hinge point, then follow the fallout. That basic setup sounds simple, but it gives her a lot of room to play. A sister is missing from a queen's memory. The wrong person is poisoned. A heroine is asked to prove she belongs among gods. A girl with powers starts listening to the wrong people.

She likes pressure.

That is what ties her entries together, even when the settings change from fairy-tale kingdoms to Mount Olympus to the world of superheroes. Calonita tends to pick a central character who is already carrying doubt, grief, loneliness, or anger, then push that feeling harder. The plot gets bigger, but the emotional question usually stays close: who are you when the story you thought you knew stops protecting you?

Her Disney heroines feel active in a very Jen Calonita way. Snow White, Elsa, Meg, Violet Parr, and Anita Weatherby all have to sort out what they believe, who they can trust, and whether they are brave enough to step into a mess that keeps getting worse. There is usually a mystery or quest driving the pages forward, but the heart of the book is still the character's scramble to make the next right choice.

These novels are standalones, so there is no need to read them in sequence. What carries from one to the next is tone. Expect quick pacing, strong emotional hooks, lots of familiar details from the original stories, and one big altered premise that changes everything.

If you want Disney nostalgia with a little more bite, this is a very readable run. Calonita keeps the sparkle, but she also makes the road to the ending much harder, and usually more interesting.
