Series background & context

A Gathering of Dragons is Meljean Brook's barbarian fantasy romance series, published under the name Milla Vane. It takes place in the Western Realms, a harsh world of warrior peoples, walled kingdoms, dangerous magic, gods, demons, and old violence that has never fully stayed in the past. The books are high-heat romances, but their characters are also dealing with war, succession, exile, and the threat of a returning enemy.

A generation earlier, the Destroyer devastated the region. The alliance that rose afterward is fragile, and every ruler or would-be ruler has a different idea of what survival should cost. That larger threat runs through the series, giving the romances a shared backdrop even though each main novel centers on a new couple and resolves that couple's main relationship.

The Beast of Blackmoor is an optional prequel novella. It follows warrior princess Mala as she travels to Blackmoor to tame the feared beast who might help her earn a place among her people. Instead, she finds a cursed land, a warlord's rule, and Kavik, a barbarian warrior who is not the monster she expected. It stands outside the main story arc, but later books mention events and characters from it.

The central storyline begins with A Heart of Blood and Ashes. Maddek, a barbarian warrior determined to avenge his murdered parents, captures Yvenne, the daughter of the king he blames. Yvenne has her own reasons to hate her father, and her proposal of a marriage alliance turns a revenge mission into a fight for both their thrones. Their book sets the shape of the wider political conflict.

These are not gentle fairy tales.

In A Touch of Stone and Snow, Lizzan has been driven from her northern island home after a terrible defeat. She crosses paths with Aerax, the prince and childhood friend she believes betrayed her. Their forced journey brings them close to the series' larger alliance while making them face years of hurt, fear, and unfinished loyalty.

A Dance of Smoke and Steel continues the main arc with Laina, heir to Krimathe, and Saxen, the son of a demon warlord. Laina's quest for the goddess Vela requires her to serve a man she has sworn to kill, while Saxen is trying to make amends after years of torture and the damage tied to his family. The Destroyer's approaching army keeps the personal stakes connected to a much larger fight.

Read the main novels in order for the clearest view of the alliance, the realm politics, and the growing threat. Start with A Heart of Blood and Ashes if you want the core story. Read The Beast of Blackmoor first if you enjoy prequels and want extra context before moving through the main sequence. Expect brutal action, stubborn characters, explicit romance, and relationships built through hard choices rather than easy trust.
