Series background & context

This is Sajni Patel's darker, myth-heavy side, a YA companion duology that blends Greek myth with Indian lore. The books share a world and a family, so they work best in order, but each one has its own lead, romance, and emotional center.

The first book, A Drop of Venom, follows Manisha, a teenage priestess from the naga people who has spent years hiding from the king's violence and the monsters that haunt the land. Much of the story moves between sacred floating temples, dangerous wild places, and the rigid power of the kingdom. When Manisha survives a brutal assault and returns changed, the book turns into a story about rage, survival, and what it means to be remade by violence.

Patel pairs her with Pratyush, a famed monster slayer who wants a way out of the life the king has forced on him. That gives the book two viewpoints, one from someone marked as monstrous, one from someone praised for hunting monsters. The tension between those labels drives a lot of the series. So does the question of who gets protected, who gets sacrificed, and who gets to tell the story of what happened.

The second book, A Touch of Blood, turns back to an earlier part of the family story and follows Eshani, Manisha's older sister. Eshani once made a bargain to save her people, and that promise pulls her into the Nightmare Realm, a place full of shades, monsters, and old prophecies. Hiran, the hidden Gatekeeper of that realm, becomes central to her story. The scale grows larger here, but the emotional stakes stay personal.

These books do not treat monsters as simple.

Across both novels, Patel uses myth not just for spectacle but for pressure. The series cares about sisterhood, consent, power, grief, survival, and the cost of vengeance. There is romance in both books, but this is not soft or fluffy fantasy. The mood is tense, eerie, and sometimes brutal, with real danger around every turn.

What makes the world memorable is how much texture it has. Naga history, holy temples, monster hunters, kings, underworld rules, and prophecy all matter, but they never crowd out the characters. At heart, this is a series about young women trying to stay human in a world that keeps naming them something else.
