A Hard Place

2

Cytress Vee

by Kalvin Thane

2017

In the Void between spiral arms, Commander Trenn and her misfit marines hunt for a weakness in the Creeps before the Alliance breaks. It is a military sci-fi opener built on squad friction, dark worlds, and a war already going badly.

3

Darker Places

A discovery sends Bulwark deeper into the Void, where Trenn's team and the ship's specialists hunt for answers about the Creeps. If they can learn enough in time, the Alliance might finally get something it can use.

4

Empire

2017

With a captured Creep warship in play, Bulwark's captain is ordered to pull back and hand it over. Trenn's squad is caught in the middle as obedience, strategy, and survival start pulling the crew in different directions.

Series background & context

A Dog Squad Story is Kalvin Thane's military science fiction series, and it starts with Cytress Vee. The big frame is a war between the Alliance, a loose coalition of sixty civilizations, and the Creeps, an enemy pushing across the Void. At the center of that fight is Commander Trenn and her Dog Squad, a rough-edged marine unit sent into the places where a clean answer usually doesn't exist.

The setting matters a lot. The Void is a huge stretch of space between two spiral arms, three thousand light years across and dotted with thousands of dark worlds. That gives the books room for fleet combat, but also for lonely planets, ruined outposts, damaged ships, and missions where help can be very far away.

It reads like space opera with a boots-on-the-deck military feel.

Each book takes that larger war and turns it into a specific job. The series keeps narrowing huge galactic stakes down to the choices of a small team on a hard assignment. In Cytress Vee, Trenn's team is trying to find a weakness in an enemy the Alliance barely understands. A Hard Place centers on a derelict Creep ship that might contain badly needed technology, if Bulwark's crew can keep it from being destroyed first. Darker Places pushes deeper into enemy territory in search of answers, Incursion sends Dog Squad onto the planet Nex, and Empire adds a captured warship and a nasty conflict over orders.

Trenn is the anchor, but the series is not a lone-hero story. The books lean on the marines in Dog Squad, the technical specialists aboard the cruiser Bulwark, and the officers trying to manage a war with too little information and not enough margin for error. That mix gives the series two kinds of tension at once. There is the obvious danger of combat, and there is the quieter strain of personality clashes, command decisions, and different ideas about what matters most in the middle of a crisis.

Nobody gets an easy posting out here.

If you like squad-based stories, this series has that appeal. The action is fast, but the books keep returning to useful questions: how much can one team change in a losing war, what do you do with incomplete information, and how long can a battered alliance keep holding the line? Read them in order, starting with Cytress Vee, because the war, the mystery around the Creeps, and Trenn's role in the fight all build from book to book.
