Series background & context
A Change of Fortune Mystery centers on Ruby Proulx, a young woman who has spent most of her life on the move, helping her father sell patent medicines and reading people well enough to survive. By the time the series opens, she is desperate for a steadier life. That wish brings her to Old Orchard, Maine, in 1898, where her estranged aunt Honoria Belden runs the Hotel Belden, a seaside house that caters to Spiritualists, mediums, and guests looking for answers from beyond the veil.
That hotel is the heart of the series. It gives Ruby shelter, work, and something she has never really had before, a chance at family. It also puts her in the middle of a world built on belief, showmanship, and careful performance. Ruby knows how easy it is to fake insight, but she is not so sure every strange happening can be explained away. That tension gives the books their particular flavor. They have a paranormal shimmer, but they stay grounded in motive, money, secrets, and the ways people use faith to comfort, control, or deceive.
Old Orchard matters just as much as the mystery plot. Estevao sets the books at a moment when the resort town is growing fast, with summer visitors, new attractions, and all the bustle that comes with a place trying to define itself. The seaside setting gives the series salt air, grand hotels, bathhouses, crowded streets, and a sense that almost anyone can arrive by train carrying a secret. The history never feels like homework. It simply shapes the way the characters move through the world.
In Whispers Beyond the Veil, Ruby arrives in town hiding a deadly mistake from her past. She hopes to disappear into the Belden's odd but welcoming community, only to find that a psychic investigator and a suspicious death make anonymity impossible. The book sets up the series well because the murder matters, but so does Ruby's deeper question: can she build a new life without being dragged back into the old one?
Ruby is always reading the room.
In Whispers of Warning, the frame widens. Ruby has started to settle into her place at the hotel and is drawn into the orbit of Sophronia Foster Eldridge, a noted Spiritualist and suffragist. When sabotage rocks the town and Sophronia turns up dead, Ruby begins asking questions that pull the series toward politics as well as crime. Women's rights, public respectability, and the pressure to stay quiet all become part of the danger. Officer Warren Yancey and Aunt Honoria help give the series a recurring cast, but Ruby remains the center of gravity.
These are cozy historical mysteries, but they have a sharp edge. Expect strong period atmosphere, a heroine who is clever because she has had to be, and plots that care as much about belonging and reinvention as they do about solving a killing. If you like mysteries where the setting feels alive and the line between intuition and trickery never stays still for long, this series is a good place to settle in.
