Series background & context

This is probably Irvine's wildest series, and it knows it.

The core setup is pure adventure. Captain Rob McGregor and his pirate crew steal the treasure of Captain William Kidd, sail away rich, and are then thrown out of their own century by a violent electrical storm. When they reappear in 2014 and seize a luxury resort in Puerto Rico, the books turn into a collision between pirate instinct and modern panic.

That would be enough for most series, but this one adds more. A deadly strain of pneumonic plague starts moving through the closed resort environment, which means the story is not only about time travel and hostages. It becomes a race to contain disease, understand what has happened, and stop a local crisis from becoming something much worse. The result is a strange but energetic mix of swashbuckling, disaster thriller, medical suspense, and speculative fiction.

What makes the series fun is the contrast. Rob McGregor and his crew arrive with 17th-century assumptions about power, loot, and survival, then run headfirst into modern medicine, modern law, and technologies they cannot make sense of. At the same time, the people in the resort have to deal with armed men who are not playing by present-day rules. That pressure gives the books their pace.

Despite the outrageous premise, Irvine keeps the stakes clear. People are trapped. The plague is real. The time displacement matters. And beneath the adventure, there is a genuine interest in how one impossible event can break open several different kinds of threat at once.

If you like your thrillers genre-blending, energetic, and a little gleeful about how much they can throw together, 21st Century Pirates Inc. is the series to try.
