See Them Dead

by Ian CP Irvine

2022

Peter Nicolson is pulled into a case that mixes the dead, the missing, and a secret powerful interests will kill to protect. This eerie thriller blends conspiracy, investigation, and a creeping sense that the world is becoming stranger.

Series background & context

Haunted from Without takes the strange medical and psychological questions of the earlier Peter Nicolson story and pushes them out into the wider world.

Peter is still the key figure, but the series becomes broader and busier here. Reports start appearing of people who can see and speak with the dead, which gives the books a stronger ghost-story surface. At the same time, Peter is drawn into corporate secrets, missing files, kidnappings, and a conspiracy with global consequences. The strange and the worldly sit side by side all the way through.

One of the biggest threads follows Peter as he is enlisted by an Iowa farmers' group and pulled toward the mystery of the missing GM File. That storyline brings in the politics and danger of genetically modified agriculture, powerful companies, and the kind of truth that could do real financial damage if it ever became public. Around it run more personal stories, including Susie's grief and the dying secret her father tried to pass on, plus the kidnapping of a Scottish teenager.

That mix is the point of the series. It does not narrow itself to one case. Instead, it lets several lines twist together until they start leaning on one another, with Peter acting as the human center trying to keep up. Because the books move between Scotland, bigger corporate interests, and an apocalyptic sense of threat, the stakes feel larger than in Haunted from Within even when the emotional hook stays personal.

Tonally, this is Irvine in his big-mosaic mode. There is medical suspense, conspiracy fiction, detective work, and outright supernatural unease. The question of what people are really seeing, and why, never sits far from the question of who is using fear, science, or secrecy for profit.

Readers who enjoy thrillers that are willing to be a little weird will probably have the most fun here. You get Peter Nicolson's investigative streak, a strong dose of dread, and a story world where private grief and public catastrophe keep colliding.
