Twilight Summary Overview

A seventeen-year-old girl, Bella Swan, relocates from Phoenix, Arizona to Forks, Washington to live with her father, Charlie. Her distaste for the rainy town is palpable, but she's aiming to give her mother, Renée, space to enjoy her new relationship with her boyfriend, Phil. Upon joining the local high school, Bella’s attention is drawn to five alluring, mysterious students, Edward, Emmett, Alice Cullen, and Rosalie and Jasper Hale, who are the adopted kids of Dr. Carlisle and Esme Cullen. Bella shares a biology class with Edward who initially shows a cold demeanor towards her, vanishing from school for a week after their first encounter. Edward's return to school sees him adopt a friendlier attitude towards Bella. She finds herself intrigued by his icy touch and changing eye color, and is utterly bewildered when he swiftly saves her from a near fatal accident in the school's parking lot, exhibiting superhuman strength and speed. Bella's attraction towards Edward grows, and despite him warning her to stay away, he offers to drive her to Seattle after hearing about her plans. At a beach get-together, Bella learns about an old Quileute legend from Jacob Black, a local teen, that portrays the Cullens as non-human-eating vampires, a claim which Jacob himself doesn't believe. When Bella is accosted by a group of men during a shopping trip to Port Angeles, Edward again proves his extraordinary abilities by rescuing her. It's here that he confesses to being a mind-reader, but admits Bella's mind is the only one he cannot penetrate. Overwhelmed yet undeterred, Bella confesses her knowledge about Edward and his family being vampires, a fact that doesn't change her feelings towards him. As their relationship develops, Bella finds herself in danger when a visiting vampire sets his sights on her. A tumultuous series of events follows, culminating in Bella being bitten by the vampire, and Edward having to make the choice to suck the venom out to prevent Bella from turning. Despite the danger and her desire to become a vampire too, Bella remains committed to Edward, content for now with his promise to stay with her.

preface

A silent observer stares fearfully into the gleeful gaze of her impending killer. Despite the terror that grips her, she finds a sense of nobility in sacrificing her life for a loved one. She harbors no regrets for the circumstances that led her to this fateful moment.

chapter 1

Bella Swan, a seventeen-year-old girl, relocates from Phoenix, Arizona, to the damp town of Forks, Washington. Her parents split up when she was younger and her mom, Renée, moved her to Phoenix. However, Renée has a new love interest, Phil, and Bella decides to stay with her dad, Charlie, Forks's chief of police. Charlie gives Bella an old truck he got from his buddy Billy Black. Bella settles into Charlie's house, shedding tears as she watches the torrential rain outside. On her debut day at Forks High School, Bella becomes acquainted with a few classmates like Eric, Jessica, and Mike. She's especially intrigued by five extraordinarily good-looking students who keep to themselves during lunch. Jessica discloses that they're the Cullens and the Hales, foster kids of Dr. and Mrs. Cullen, and they moved to Forks two years prior. Edward Cullen, in particular, spends lunch fixated on Bella. However, Edward seems strangely angry when Bella is seated beside him in biology. After school, Bella overhears Edward requesting a class change in the school office. Overwhelmed, she drives home, holding back her tears.

chapter 2

Bella's second day at her new school sees her accompanied by Mike in English class and to her next subject, earning Eric's jealousy. Edward Cullen is absent from school that day. During dinner at home later on, Bella's father, Charlie, conveys his respect for Dr. Cullen's surgical skills and expresses his displeasure on how the townsfolk treat the Cullen family. Edward does not show up at school for the rest of the week. Monday lunchtime leaves Bella feeling uneasy when she spots Edward with his family. Despite Edward's intense gaze at her, Bella confides in Jessica, admitting she believes Edward doesn't like her. However, their interaction in biology class later that day says otherwise. Edward initiates a friendly conversation, they work together on a class project and there's a physical connection when their hands unintentionally touch. Bella is taken aback by Edward's icy skin and the unusual electric sensation that follows. She also notices Edward's eye color change from black to gold, but he avoids her questions about it. Edward shifts the conversation to Bella's background and her move to Forks. As Bella leaves school, she catches Edward's unmissable stare from the parking lot.

chapter 3

Bella navigates her car cautiously on the ice-coated roads, her mind preoccupied with Mike and Eric's brewing competition for her attention. At school, she discovers chains on her tires, a safety measure by Charlie. She spots Edward, four vehicles away, looking at her in fear as Tyler Crowley's van loses control, sliding her way. Edward miraculously rescues Bella from the collision, propelling her to safety. The impact, however, leaves her dazed and confused about Edward's superhuman speed. As she observes handprints embedded in the van, she grows more suspicious. Both Bella and Tyler are rushed to the hospital. The remorseful Tyler apologizes profusely, while Dr. Cullen assures Bella of her health. Edward visits Bella at the hospital, but his refusal to shed light on the miraculous rescue annoys her. That evening, Bella dreams about Edward.

chapter 4

Bella continually dreams of Edward leaving her behind. Tyler becomes persistent in his apologies after the accident, competing with Mike and Eric for her attention. Despite everyone denying Edward's presence at the accident, Bella notices his increasing aloofness and the darkening of his eyes. When Tyler, Eric, and Mike invite Bella to the dance, she fabricates an excuse about being in Seattle. She nudges Mike towards Jessica, knowing Jessica's feelings for him. Edward, however, discourages friendship with Bella, but offers to drive her to Seattle the following day, stating her truck wouldn't withstand the journey. Despite his previous statement of not wanting friendship, he confesses to being unable to avoid her. Bella, intrigued, agrees to his offer.

chapter 5

Mike arranges a beach gathering and Jessica is thrilled he agreed to join her at the dance. Over lunch, Jessica points out Edward's solitary presence and intense focus on Bella. Edward calls Bella over, his eyes golden once more, confessing his struggles to resist her while warning her about their potential friendship. Bella expresses confusion about Edward's inexplicable abilities. Edward suggests he may not be a hero, but a villain. Bella rejects this idea, but Edward insists she's mistaken and announces his plan to skip their biology class. In biology, students test their blood types, making Bella dizzy at the sight of blood. Mike assists her towards the nurse's office, but Edward interjects and takes her instead. Mike checks if Bella's still attending the beach party, she confirms she is. Edward ensures Bella is excused from her remaining class and decides to drive her home. Bella invites him to the beach event, but he declines upon learning it's at La Push, citing a hiking trip with his sibling. He also cautions Bella about visiting the beach.

chapter 6

Before a beach gathering, Bella queries her dad about the region where Edward and his sibling are planning a hike. He warns of the dangerous bear population making it unfit for human activities. Bella attends a beach outing at La Push the following day, where she mingles with her friends and some Quileute tribe teenagers. A boy named Jacob Black acquaints himself, mentioning his father, Billy, is close friends with Bella's father. When Sam, an older Quileute youngster, states the Cullens are never seen at the beach, Bella concludes the Cullens are barred from La Push. Bella invites Jacob for a stroll, and he shares a chilling tale about the "cold ones". Jacob elaborates the Quileute lore claiming his tribe descended from werewolves, which have a sole predator: the cold ones, namely vampires. The story goes that a peace pact was made between Jacob's great-granddad and a group of animal-hunting cold ones. The deal was, if the cold ones refrained from trespassing on Quileute territory, then the tribe would keep their vampire secret. Lastly, Jacob discloses to Bella that the Cullens are vampires.

chapter 7

Post the beach party, Bella experiences a dream where she is in the woods near an ocean. Jacob and Mike advise her to escape from the ocean, followed by Jacob transforming into a wolf. Edward emerges with sharp teeth, leading to a wolf attack, waking Bella up. She investigates vampires online, realizing that they are usually deemed as evil in most cultures, except for an Italian myth that paints them in a positive light. Bella contemplates her situation during a long forest walk and decides she wants to be with Edward no matter what. Bright sunlight greets the next day. At school, Mike seeks a date with Bella, who declines stating it might upset Jessica. Jessica, however, invites Bella for shopping along with Lauren and Angela for the forthcoming dance. The absence of the Cullens at school distresses Bella. Jessica postpones the shopping spree to the next day as Mike has asked her out to dinner. The subsequent day, Bella is disappointed to see Edward missing yet again, but cheers up in the evening on her departure from Forks for the shopping expedition with the girls.

chapter 8

Bella joins her friends for a shopping trip to Port Angeles, where she finds out from Lauren's hostility that Tyler has spread a rumor about them going to prom together. She also discovers that the Cullens are absent from school on sunny days, supposedly for backpacking trips. Wanting to visit a bookstore, Bella leaves her friends with a promise to reunite at a restaurant. However, she ends up in a deserted part of town and is harassed by four men. Edward unexpectedly appears, driving his car up in anger and urging Bella to climb in. He asks her assistance in calming himself down before they head to the restaurant where Jessica and Angela are waiting. Edward takes responsibility for Bella's return trip, allowing their friends to depart. At the restaurant, he encourages Bella to eat but doesn't order anything himself. Bella observes a correlation between Edward's mood and his eye color - light gold for happiness and dark for anger. As they converse, Edward reveals his ability to read minds, excluding Bella's. He shares that he was able to sense Bella's danger in Port Angeles by reading her harassers' thoughts. Edward confesses that he might have murdered the harassers had he not remained with Bella.

chapter 9

Returning from Port Angeles, Edward reveals to Bella that he tracked her through her scent, yet he remains puzzled about his inability to read her thoughts. Bella notices their rapid speed and urges Edward to slow down, who reduces their speed to eighty. She relays Jacob's vampire theory about the Cullens to Edward, who is caught off guard by Bella's acceptance of him being a vampire. Edward debunks certain vampire misconceptions, like sleeping in coffins and the aversion to sunlight, and promises to demonstrate the sun's effect on him. He also admits to drinking blood but clarifies it's from animals, a practice that helps him and his family to resist hunting humans, though they falter occasionally. Edward warns Bella that being alone with her is a risky error on his part, citing his recent hunting trip with his brother. Once Bella arrives at her home, she acknowledges three truths: Edward is indeed a vampire, he craves her blood, and she is deeply in love with him.

chapter 10

Edward ferries Bella to school, while his kin use a different vehicle. He acknowledges he's defying his family's norms by being with her. He picks up on Jessica's thoughts and informs Bella she will inquire if they are an item. He's correct, and when Jessica questions Bella, Bella reveals that Edward has proposed to take her to Seattle on the weekend, and she concedes she's fonder of him than he is of her. The pair share a meal at lunch. Edward is irked that Bella told Jessica she's more fond of him, and corrects her misconception. He contests Bella's belief of being ordinary and him being extraordinary, reminding her she's unaware of what every male was contemplating about her on her first day. He then affirms his affection for her by stating he'd rather cause himself pain by leaving her than cause her any harm. Attempting to divert the topic, Edward proposes a different destination for their weekend plan since it's forecasted to be sunny; he wishes to demonstrate what occurs when sunlight touches him, yet this can't happen in public. They delve into his family's hunting habits, and Edward reveals his fangs. Bella's request to watch him hunt one day is met with a vehement negative from Edward, which scares her.

chapter 11

During a biology class, Bella experiences an electrifying sensation sitting beside Edward. He brushes her face with his freezing hand, but strangely, she feels warmth. In PE, Mike warns Bella about Edward, saying that he watches her like she's his next meal. At the end of the day, Edward reveals he had listened in on Bella and Mike's conversation by reading Mike's thoughts. He offers Bella the chance to drive on Saturday as an apology. Additionally, Edward clarifies why Bella shouldn't watch him hunt: his family's prey instincts could potentially overpower their rationality, posing a risk to her. The following morning, Charlie voices worry about Bella not attending the dance. Shortly after, Edward arrives to take Bella to school. He spends the day inquiring about her preferences and her life in Phoenix. Post school, they hang out in Edward's car outside Bella's house, discussing various topics until dusk, which Edward mentions is the safest time for him. As Bella gets out of the car, another vehicle arrives. Edward leaves quickly but is seen by the occupants of the other car. Jacob Black exits the vehicle and greets Bella, while his father Billy, visibly worried, recognizes Edward from the passenger seat.

chapter 12

Bella tells Jacob that Edward was in the departing car when Jacob and Billy arrived. Billy cautions Bella to stay vigilant. Charlie reveals his intention to spend Saturday fishing. On the preceding day, Edward informs Bella of his early departure from school to hunt with Alice, a precautionary measure for their solo time the next day. He shares Alice's support for their relationship, unlike the rest of their family who are puzzled by his fixation on Bella. Seeing Rosalie's hostile stare at Bella, Edward admits his relationship with Bella puts the Cullen family in danger, as a potential mishap could expose them. Alice introduces herself before she and Edward exit. By day's end, Bella informs Mike, Jessica, and Charlie that she cancels her Seattle trip but deceives them about her plan to spend the day with Edward. On the appointed day, Edward arrives at her house and allows her to drive as previously agreed. They journey to a thick forest where the road ends, and trek five miles to a sun-drenched meadow's edge. Here, Edward steps into the sunlight.

chapter 13

Edward's skin shimmers in sunlight as if made of diamond. Bella tries to get close, but he quickly moves away, showing his speed and strength as a warning of his danger. But he assures Bella he wouldn't hurt her. Edward admits that Bella is more of a risk to him than others because of a powerful desire he has for her. He hints that his brother Emmett has succumb to similar temptations, leading Bella to guess that Emmett killed the people he craved. Edward reveals that his initial attraction to Bella was so strong, he tried to escape it by changing his schedule and fleeing to Alaska. Once he felt strong enough to resist harming her, he returned and tried to behave normally. However, his attraction made him rescue Bella from a near-fatal accident with Tyler's van. When Bella asks how she can ease his struggle, Edward delicately touches her and explains his internal battle, which she seems to grasp. Swiftly, Edward carries Bella through the forest to the truck. They share a passionate kiss that leaves Bella flushed and breathless. Edward is pleased that he remained in control. Bella feels dizzy afterwards, prompting Edward to take over the driving.

chapter 14

Edward reveals his life story to Bella on their drive home. He was born in 1901, and in 1918, he was turned into a vampire by Carlisle to save him from dying of Spanish Influenza. Edward was Carlisle's first vampire convert, followed by Esme, Carlisle's partner, who he saved after a cliff fall. Rosalie was brought into their family with hopes she'd pair with Edward, but he saw her as a sister. Rosalie's partner, Emmett, joined after she rescued him from a bear attack. Alice, a seer, foresaw Jasper being alone and knew they were meant to be together. She later saw a vision of the Cullens and joined them with Jasper. Despite her visions, Alice doesn't know her origins. Upon reaching Bella's house, Edward confesses that he watches her sleep and listens to her sleep-talk. When her father, Charlie, arrives home, Edward vanishes. Bella finds him in her room and they share a close moment. She observes that he seems more comfortable around her, to which Edward credits to his temporary desensitization to her scent. He shares that he's in love for the first time and admits his jealousy when Mike asked Bella to a dance. He reveals that the first time he watched her sleep, he heard her whisper his name. When Charlie checks on Bella, Edward vanishes and Bella feigns sleep. Bella later discusses marrying Edward, but he doesn't believe it's feasible. He sings her to sleep later on.

chapter 15

Bella awakens to find Edward still in her room. She discovers her father, Charlie, has reconnected her truck's battery that he had previously disconnected to prevent her from sneaking out. Edward proposes a meeting with his family and wishes to meet Charlie, suggesting Bella inform her father about their new relationship. She anxiously prepares to meet the Cullens, worried they may not approve of her. Edward kisses her upon seeing her, causing her to faint. Their destination is the Cullens' magnificent woodland abode. Carlisle, Esme, and Jasper greet Bella warmly, and Alice is particularly excited, though Emmett and Rosalie are absent. After Edward performs a song he composed for Bella, he reveals that Alice has predicted the arrival of other vampires, necessitating increased vigilance to protect Bella. Bella is taken aback by the presence of a cross in the house, which Edward explains was carved by Carlisle while he was still human. He further explains Carlisle's history as a 362-year-old vampire originating from London, the son of a pastor who pursued witches, werewolves, and vampires. At the age of twenty-three, Carlisle was attacked by a vampire he was hunting, leading to his transformation into a vampire.

chapter 16

Edward opens up to Bella about Carlisle's past in his office. After becoming a vampire, Carlisle attempted suicide by deprivation of blood but found an alternative in animal blood when he attacked a deer out of desperation. He moved to studying and practicing medicine, eventually gaining full control over his vampiric urges. During his time in Italy, he interacted with cultivated vampires who encouraged him to consume human blood, leading him to seek a companion in America. He encountered Edward while working in a 1918 Chicago hospital during a flu epidemic. Aware of Edward's impending death, Carlisle turned him into a vampire. Edward confesses his initial rebellion but eventual return to Carlisle's side, accepting his beliefs. Edward then takes Bella to his room, showcasing his music collection and playfully pretending to pounce on her. When Alice and Jasper join them, they humorously suggest splitting Bella for lunch.

chapter 17

Edward takes Bella home to change into casual attire for a baseball match with the Cullens, only to find Billy and Jacob Black waiting in their vehicle. Bella allows them inside, where Billy expresses his concerns about her relationship with Edward, suggesting that her father, Charlie, should be informed. Bella counters this with the Quileute agreement that forbids Billy from revealing the truth. Upon Charlie's arrival, Bella discloses her relationship with Edward, a revelation that surprises him, though he accepts it. Subsequently, Edward meets Charlie, assuring him of Bella's safety during the night. They journey to the game location in Emmett's enormous Jeep, on a rugged mountain trail. When they reach their destination, Edward carries Bella, rushing her to a wide field where his family is already present, with a storm brewing in the distance. The Cullens play baseball with extraordinary strength and speed, so much so that they must play during thunderstorms to mask the loud sound produced when the bat hits the ball. Esme and Bella spectate, with Esme confiding in Bella about her own tragic past and her joy at Edward's newfound happiness with Bella. Unexpectedly, Alice senses the presence of other vampires. Edward, assessing their intentions through his ability to read minds, determines they're driven by curiosity and not malice. However, the Cullens remain cautious and continue the game, while Edward stays close to Bella, regretfully acknowledging the potential dangers he's exposed her to. Before long, they hear the approaching vampires.

chapter 18

A trio of vampires—Laurent, Victoria, and James—approach the Cullen clan. Carlisle greets them and extends an invitation to their home, though he requests they refrain from hunting nearby to avoid trouble for his family. When a wind gust reveals Bella's human scent, James quickly catches on. Tension rises as Edward and James adopt defensive positions, but Carlisle insists Bella is under their protection, effectively diffusing the situation. Laurent assures them they won't cause harm to Bella or hunt in the vicinity, and he accepts Carlisle's invitation. Bella is escorted to the tree line by Edward, Alice, and Emmett. They then rush to the Jeep, with Bella riding piggyback on Edward. They speed away from Forks to distance Bella from the danger, but Bella insists she needs to return home to prevent Charlie from involving law enforcement. Alice suggests they pull over to strategize, while Edward warns that James, being a tracker, will pursue Bella to her home—this worries Bella for Charlie's safety. After some discussion, they agree to Bella's proposal: she'll go home, feign anger, announce she's going to Phoenix, and Alice and Jasper will accompany her. Meanwhile, Edward and Emmett will stay back to confront James.

chapter 19

Bella lashes out at Edward before sprinting to her room to gather her things. Recognizing that her father Charlie will only be safe if she leaves, Bella decides to cause him pain to ensure he lets her go. She tells Charlie she's headed back to Phoenix, and when he questions whether Edward has harmed her, she lies that she broke up with him and that she despises their town of Forks. Bella cruelly echoes the words her mother used when she left Charlie years prior. Bella hops into her truck, and she and Edward rush to the Cullens' residence, with Alice tailing them in a separate vehicle. Unbeknownst to them, James, having discovered Bella's return home and overheard her mentioning Phoenix, is hot on their trail. Edward tells Bella that James is eager to hunt her because the Cullens are defending her. Edward knows he'll have to kill James by dismembering him and incinerating the parts. On reaching the Cullens', they meet Laurent who warns them of James' unstoppable power, then departs apologetically. To cover Bella's scent, Esme hands her different clothes. Esme and a bitter Rosalie take Bella's truck and drive west to mislead Victoria. Alice and Jasper head south with Bella, while Edward, Carlisle, and Emmett strategize on luring James away to ambush him.

chapter 20

Bella finds herself waking up in a Phoenix motel, her mind filled with memories of the car ride there with Alice and Jasper. She feels guilty for the potential harm they might face because of her. However, Alice and Jasper reassure her that they are not in danger, emphasizing how important she is to Edward. Bella then inquires about the vampire transformation process. Though Edward would rather she did not know, Alice reveals the painful process involving a venomous bite and a torturous transformation that could make victims wish for death. Suddenly, Alice experiences a vision in which she sees and sketches a room full of mirrors. Bella identifies the place as her old ballet studio from her childhood. After communicating this to Carlisle, Edward tells Bella that James managed to escape them and boarded a plane. He assures her that Charlie and the rest of the Cullens are safe, although Victoria visited her home in Forks. As Charlie was not home at the time, Esme and Rosalie are currently looking after him. With her mother in Florida, Bella can't help but worry about her safety. She leaves Renée a voicemail, telling her to stay put until she hears from Bella again.

chapter 21

Bella is abruptly woken up by Alice's vision featuring James operating a VCR in a room Bella identifies as her mother's house in Phoenix. Alice communicates this to the Cullens, explaining that Edward, Carlisle, and Emmett will fly to Phoenix to ensure Bella's safety. Bella, however, fears for her mother's wellbeing. A phone call interrupts their morning. Bella picks up and hears her mother's voice, only to have it replaced by James'. He reveals he has Bella's mother captive and directs Bella to escape Alice and Jasper's watch, stressing that her mother's life hangs in the balance. Bella considers the airport as a potential escape, as she, Alice, and Jasper are to meet Edward, Carlisle, and Emmett there. James instructs her to proceed to her mother's house alone and call the provided number. Bella is certain that the call will lead her to the mirrored room, where she will meet her end. She pens a note to Edward, expressing her love and pleading for his forgiveness. She appeals to him not to chase after James, fearful of any harm coming his way.

chapter 22

In the airport, Bella escapes and hails a taxi to her mother's home. She quickly dials the number she sees next to the phone and James picks up. He instructs her to head to the dance studio. At the studio, she hears her mother's voice and sees a TV showcasing a family video from her childhood. It dawns on Bella that this was James's trick; her mom was never in danger and remains safe in Florida. James queries if Edward will seek revenge for what he is about to do. Bella responds that she had written Edward a letter pleading him not to. James plans to leave a message for Edward as well, setting up a digital camera to document the ensuing events. He reveals that he once craved for Alice, back when she was a human in a mental institution. An older vampire transformed Alice into a vampire to protect her from James. He then scoffs at Bella, claiming Edward was too timid to do the same for her. His taunting ends as he brutally assaults her, causing her to crash her head into the mirrors and fracturing her leg. As she bleeds, Bella hopes for a quick death. She blacks out as James closes in on her.

chapter 23

In her dreams, Bella finds herself submerged underwater, hearing a ferocious growl. A severe pain pulsates in her hand, and soon, she is convinced that she's dead when she hears what she perceives to be an "angel," Edward, calling her name. She hears the sound of a growl, a snap, and then a cry, until it suddenly halts. The angel continues to call her name amidst sobs, and at first, Bella is unable to respond. Eventually, she regains consciousness enough to shout out. A serene voice begins to evaluate her wounds. Suddenly, her hand feels like it's on fire, forcing her to scream for the pain to stop. Carlisle realizes that Bella has been bitten by James as he treats her injuries. He informs Edward that in order to save Bella, he needs to remove the venom from her hand before it's too late. Edward hesitates, fearing he might not be able to control himself after tasting Bella's blood, but chooses to go through with it. Alice soothes Bella while she attempts to inform Alice that James was aware of her past. Edward cradles Bella as she drifts off to sleep in his arms while he carries her out of the structure.

chapter 24

Bella regains consciousness in a hospital setting. Edward, who is with her, assures her that his ability to resist her blood is evidence of his affection. He discloses that after he separated Bella from James, Emmett and Jasper eliminated him. He also reveals that Alice has discovered her human past through James's recording. Bella's mother is present at the hospital too. Edward justifies Bella's injuries by saying that she fell down two flights of stairs and through a window while coming to his hotel room in Phoenix. Renee, Bella's mom, warmly embraces her and shares that they've purchased a house in Florida. Bella, however, expresses her desire to remain in Forks, largely due to Edward. Following Renee's departure, Edward suggests Bella to move to Florida for her safety while he remains in Forks. Bella insists on Edward staying with her, questioning his refusal to turn her into a vampire. They end up in an argument, with neither willing to change their viewpoint. Edward confesses that Alice foresaw Bella as a vampire in a vision. As she's drifting off to sleep, Bella asserts her belief in Alice's vision coming true.

epilogue

Edward assists Bella, who is all dolled up and has a cast on her leg, into his car. Bella is unaware of their destination until Edward gets a call from her father, Charlie, stating that Tyler is looking for her. Edward assures Tyler that Bella is occupied every night, much to Bella's surprise. She quickly understands that Edward is taking her to the prom, which initially upsets her as she had believed Edward would turn her into a vampire that night. She feels reassured knowing that Alice, Jasper, Emmett, and Rosalie will also be at the prom. At the prom, Edward and Bella dance while Jacob Black approaches and awkwardly asks Bella for a dance. He confesses that Billy urged him to warn Bella about Edward, but Bella defends Edward, saying that he saved her life. Later, Edward and Bella escape the crowd to have a private conversation. Edward reveals that he brought her to the prom so she wouldn't miss out on any human experiences. Bella, on the other hand, had hoped to be turned into a vampire. Edward does not agree, but promises to stay with her, which Bella appreciates. Bella confesses her love for Edward, who responds by affectionately pressing his cold lips to her throat.
