Zoom Trilogy Books in Order

The Zoom Trilogy is a set of picture books that feels less like a straight line and more like a series of beautiful dreams. At the center is Zoom, a cat with a gift for wandering into the edge between the ordinary world and something much stranger. His companion is Maria, a mysterious girl whose house seems to contain whole landscapes, secret passages, and routes to places that should not fit inside walls.

These books run on dream logic.

In Zoom at Sea, an old map left by Uncle Roy leads Zoom into an indoor ocean of driftwood, gulls, distance, and longing. Zoom Away sends him north in search of Captain Roy, with Maria once again helping open the way into a different realm. In Zoom Upstream, muddy footprints and a hidden path behind a bookcase pull Zoom into an Egyptian-flavored journey full of cat images, river mystery, and another clue that Uncle Roy is always somewhere just beyond reach.

What links the books is not a heavy plot but a certain kind of feeling. The adventures are gentle but never bland. There is always a little uncertainty, a little hush around the edges, as if the story knows that wonder and loneliness often travel together. Zoom is brave, but he is also curious in a very childlike way. He keeps going because the world keeps offering one more door, one more trail, one more question.

The setting does a lot of the work. Maria's house is not simply a backdrop. It is a portal, a puzzle box, and a mood. Attics, gardens, bookcases, corridors, and hidden rooms all seem ready to tip into somewhere else. That is why these books feel so memorable on a second or third reading. They invite lingering. You notice a new visual detail, or a new emotional note, every time through.

The illustrations are a huge part of the experience. Eric Beddows's black-and-white art gives the trilogy much of its atmosphere, packed with shadow, texture, and tiny discoveries. The images make the strange spaces feel both exact and impossible, which is exactly what the stories need. Younger readers can enjoy the adventure on its surface, while older readers often respond to the books' ambiguity and quiet melancholy.

They feel old-fashioned in the best way.

If you want loud jokes or tidy explanations, this probably is not the trilogy for you. But if you like picture books that trust mood, visual storytelling, and a little mystery, Zoom at Sea, Zoom Away, and Zoom Upstream have a lasting pull. They are imaginative, slightly eerie, and full of the feeling that the world may be bigger on the inside than it first appears.
