Zombie Killer Blues Books in Order

Zombie Killer Blues, later folded into the broader Irregular Scout Team One line, is Holmes at his most direct. The setup is simple in the best way. A plague collapses the United States, the dead and infected overrun whole regions, and the survivors who still believe in rebuilding something like a country have to push back one town, one road, and one mission at a time.

The series centers on Nick Agostine and the irregular scouts around him. Nick is a soldier, but not in the shiny action-movie sense. He is tired, blunt, resourceful, and shaped by loss. The scout teams mix military people and civilians who know how to survive in the ruins. Their job is to move ahead of larger Army formations, find survivors, map threats, test routes, reclaim infrastructure, and kill whatever needs killing before the next wave comes through.

That makes the books feel different from a lot of zombie fiction. The undead are a constant danger, but they are not the only one. Cannibals, warlords, breakaway factions, rebels, white supremacists, hidden agendas inside the chain of command, and the sheer fragility of a half-rebuilt society all matter too. In Even Zombie Killers Get The Blues, the scouts work ahead of the Army's move into upstate New York and the Hudson Valley. By Civil War, years have passed, families are trying to farm and raise children, and the question is no longer only how to survive, but whether peace can hold.

Holmes also plays the long game with the setting. The series does not stay trapped in the first rush of apocalypse panic. Falling goes back to those opening days and shows how Nick's world came apart, while later books like HEAT, Bad Company, and Patient Zero keep widening the conflict. Washington, Florida, the Hudson Valley, ruined cities, remote outposts, and hard little pockets of civilization all come into play. You get a sense that the country is not gone so much as broken into contested pieces.

The tone is fast, darkly funny, and very military. Holmes knows how people in uniform talk to each other when stress is high and patience is low. That gives the series a rough charm. These are not saintly survivors making speeches about hope. They gripe, joke, disobey, improvise, and keep moving. When the books hit emotional beats, they usually earn them through wear and repetition rather than melodrama.

At the same time, the core fantasy is not nihilism. It is recovery. What if there were still organized people trying to rebuild roads, farms, outposts, and law after the end? What if the zombie war became a campaign instead of a panic?

That is the hook of Zombie Killer Blues. It is a post-apocalyptic series about the grind after the fall, when staying alive is only the first step and somebody still has to go back out beyond the wire.
