Series background & context

These books move into one of the hardest and most hopeful moments of the twentieth century, the fight for a Jewish homeland in 1948. The setting is Jerusalem and the wider British Mandate of Palestine, just after the Holocaust, when survivors are arriving with almost nothing and every promise seems costly.

The cast is broad rather than narrow. Refugees, underground fighters, British officials, families, and religious leaders all share the page. That gives the series a sweeping feel, but the emotional center stays personal. People are trying to build homes, protect children, hold marriages together, and decide what kind of future is worth risking everything for.

That pressure drives every book.

What makes the setting matter so much is that every street, gate, checkpoint, and hillside is politically charged. A trip across town can turn into an arrest, a bombing, or a life-changing act of courage. The series keeps the big historical picture in view, but it never drifts far from the human cost of statehood and survival.

The tone is high-stakes historical drama with a strong spiritual thread. If you like large casts, real history, and stories about ordinary people pushed into extraordinary decisions, this is one of the Thoenes' defining series.
