Zak Fisher opens in a different register from the Time Hunters books. It is still written for younger readers, but the mood is darker, the supernatural threat is closer to horror, and the story begins with a boy who has always known something about his life does not add up. Zak is fourteen, orphaned, and unusually gifted. Everything changes when nightmare creatures called Nightwraiths attack and a Templar Knight steps in to save him. From there, Zak learns that Hell is real, that it exists in a parallel world, and that Earth has been locked in a hidden war against it for thousands of years. The book quickly turns from mystery into mission story, with Zak pulled into a conflict that is much older and larger than he ever imagined.

Avernon Monastery in Cornwall gives the series its main base, and it is a good fit for the mood Ashmore is after. The setting feels ancient, secretive, and a little cut off from everyday life. Behind its walls, Zak meets other teenagers who share his strange background and abilities. Dunk, Leah, and Sarah are all orphans. They all share his birthday. And, like Zak, they are being prepared for the moment when they come into the full strength of who they really are.

That is the core hook.

The four of them learn they are Angels, and that discovery shifts the story away from simple monster fighting into something more mythic. Their enemies are not random beasts but organised forces tied to the Hell King, Morloch, and to servants like Lord Ballivan. The immediate danger centers on the Seal of Solomon, a legendary ring that can open a portal between Earth and Hell. If the wrong side gets it, the hidden war stops being hidden.

Even with all that lore, the book does not get bogged down in explanation. Ashmore keeps things moving with chases, training, banter, and sudden bursts of danger, so the background unfolds while the plot is already in motion. The tone is serious enough to give the stakes weight, but it still has the clean, page-turning feel of a middle grade or young YA adventure. Zak is brave, but he is not fully formed yet, and part of the appeal is watching him try to understand who he is while other people are already treating him like a key piece in prophecy.

If you want a Carl Ashmore series with secret orders, apocalyptic stakes, and a tighter supernatural focus, Zak Fisher is the one to try. It trades time travel for angels, relics, and a war at the edge of the visible world.
