Author bio
Yūsei Matsui is a Japanese manga creator from Saitama Prefecture whose stories turn familiar genres into unusual partnerships. A detective works with a demon, students train to kill their teacher, and a young warrior makes running away his greatest strength. Matsui writes and draws his series, giving their jokes, action, and changes of mood a common visual voice. The strange starting ideas lead into stories about learning how other people think and finding abilities that others overlook.
He began drawing manga while he was still in elementary school.
Before launching his own serials, Matsui worked as an assistant to Yoshio Sawai, the creator of Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo. That experience gave him practical training in making manga, and Sawai's series is also among his stated favorites. Other favorites include JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and Ultimate Muscle. His own work makes room for exaggerated expressions and impossible situations, but the people placed inside those situations usually have recognizable worries about confidence, belonging, responsibility, or survival.
His first serialized series, Neuro: Supernatural Detective, began in 2005 and ran until 2009. Its central figure is a demon who feeds on mysteries and comes to the human world in search of more. High school student Yako Katsuragi becomes the human face of their detective partnership. Her father's death supplies an early mystery, while Neuro's motives keep the arrangement far from an ordinary detective agency. The manga blends criminal investigations with supernatural powers and comedy, and it received an anime adaptation in 2007.
Assassination Classroom began serialization in 2012, placing an equally unlikely relationship inside a school. A powerful, tentacled creature threatens Earth while teaching a class of students who have been written off by their school. They must learn to kill him, even as he helps them learn their subjects and recover their self-respect. The premise allows Matsui to move from slapstick to tactical action and then to the more personal problems of children being told they aren't worth much.
The teacher is both their target and the person most committed to helping them improve.
In The Elusive Samurai, Matsui moves to medieval Japan and follows the young Hojo Tokiyuki after betrayal destroys the security of his family. Tokiyuki's skill is evasion rather than the conventional ability to overpower an enemy. The story uses that difference to approach revenge and survival from a less familiar angle. It also gives Matsui a historical setting in which a child's future depends on allies, quick judgments, and knowing when escape is the useful choice.
Across these three series, Matsui repeatedly gives an unusual talent a practical purpose. Yako's partnership, the students' training, and Tokiyuki's flight all depend on relationships as well as individual ability. The comedy comes from the odd circumstances, while danger gives their decisions consequences. All three series have received anime adaptations, and Assassination Classroom has also been adapted into live-action films. His published career brings together supernatural mysteries, school stories, and historical adventure without abandoning the interest in outsiders that connects them.
