Series background & context

The York Ladies' Detective Agency Mysteries introduce Jemma James and Bobbie Baker, two friends who decide that solving crimes should not be left to men. When Jemma's husband is reported missing in action during the Second World War, she returns to her home city of York and finally sets up the private inquiry agency they once dreamed about as girls.

The series is set against blackouts, air raid sirens and rationing in 1939 and 1940, but the tone stays warm and character driven. Cases take the women from grand houses and museums to cramped back rooms and narrow medieval alleys, always with one ear on the wireless and one eye on the horizon.

The short prequel The Mystery of Mad Alice Lane finds Jemma and Bobbie on the brink of war, snatching an afternoon together as they reminisce about the detective stories they love. When a passing motorist insists he has seen a murder staged in a shop window yet no body is found, the friends test their instincts in the shadowy snickets and yards of York and prove they have the nerve for real investigations.

In the first novel, Smoke & Cracked Mirrors, Jemma moves back to York and the agency becomes official. She and Bobbie juggle a string of cases involving blackmailers, suspected bigamists and a wealthy young woman determined to erase every trace of her past. These threads tangle around an old unsolved murder, and as the uneasy lull before the bombing ends, Jemma discovers that even she is not above suspicion.

Dancing With Dusty Fossils continues the story in June 1940, when shocking crimes at York's museums shake the city. A bungled break in at the Yorkshire Museum is followed by the murder of a Castle Museum curator, and a shy clerk becomes the main suspect. Hired to clear his name, Jemma and Bobbie move between glamorous actresses, fossil filled storerooms and anxious crowds waiting for news from Dunkirk, piecing together motives that run deeper than simple greed.

Alongside the puzzles, the books explore friendship, grief and the limits placed on women who still find ways to act. Jemma searches for answers about her missing husband while Bobbie wrestles with her own family expectations, and their growing caseload brings them up against wartime bureaucracy and danger as often as it brings them laughter.

The result is a cozy crime series with a distinct wartime edge, where golden age style mysteries share the stage with blackout curtains and quiet acts of courage.
