So do places like The Sanctuary and Black Island, along with visions, experiments, old plans, and questions about what really happened that night. The series keeps borrowing energy from horror, science fiction, and serial television structure, so there is always another reveal waiting just after the current crisis.

What makes it stick is the rhythm. These books were built like seasons for a reason. They end hard, move quickly, and keep several lines of tension going at once. But the big mystery would not work nearly as well without the human damage underneath it.
