Years of Blood Books in Order

Years of Blood goes back to the English Civil War and starts with Micah Slater, a poor young man from a Northamptonshire village ruled by a harsh father and a hard religious climate. Micah fights back, leaves home, and enters a country that is already sliding toward war.

The first book, Bold and Blooded, places him in a world where loyalty is never simple. King Charles, Parliament, local commanders, landowners, and ordinary people all pull in different directions. Micah’s choices are personal at first. They become political because, in a civil war, almost everything does.

Wareham treats the conflict as messy and local as well as national. Marches, garrisons, cavalry actions, family connections, and grudges matter. Micah’s military skill gives him a way upward, but it also hardens him. The war rewards discipline and violence, and Micah has to decide how much of himself he is willing to give to both.

It is a bloody climb.

Across Red Man, Blood for Blood, and A Proper End, the story follows the making of a soldier and the price of becoming useful to powerful men. Love, marriage, patronage, revenge, and land all complicate the simple idea of fighting for a cause. Micah is not a polished gentleman officer. That is part of what makes him dangerous.

This is a compact series and best read straight through. Start with Bold and Blooded for the village, family, and first military choices, then follow Micah as the Civil War spreads and the promise of victory becomes less clean than anyone expected.
