The Yacht

by Iain Rob Wright

2016

A luxury yacht becomes a floating trap for a troubled married couple when the dead refuse to stay dead. Wright uses the cramped setting well, turning privilege and isolation into pure pressure.

Series background & context

Year of the Zombie is a little different from Wright's homegrown series because it is a shared project rather than a world built entirely by one author. The basic idea is simple. Different writers contribute zombie stories under one banner, each taking the undead problem in a slightly different direction. That gives the series a grab-bag feel, which is part of the fun.

Wright's entry is The Yacht.

That novella is exactly the kind of setting choice you want in a zombie series. A yacht is cramped, isolated, and already built like a trap. In Wright's version, the horror is tied to a wealthy couple whose marriage is already in trouble before the dead complicate matters further. That small, closed setting suits him well. He likes tension inside relationships, and on a boat there is nowhere to cool off, hide, or pretend things are normal.

Because this is a multi-author project, you should not expect the same kind of character continuity you get in The Spread or Hell on Earth. The link is theme and publishing concept more than one tightly controlled mythology. For readers, that means the books can usually be sampled independently. If you are here as a Wright completist, The Yacht is best treated as a side trip, a short standalone that shows what he can do inside somebody else's broader framework.

The tone of Wright's contribution is familiar though. He uses confinement, social friction, and the ugly practicality of survival well. A yacht sounds glamorous right up until the food, escape routes, and trust all start running out. Then it becomes one more sealed box full of frightened people and very bad options.

So the page for Year of the Zombie is useful mostly as context. It tells you where The Yacht sits and what kind of project it belongs to. If you want a long, single-author zombie arc from Wright, go to the Ravaged World Trilogy. If you want to see him take a shorter swing in a shared zombie line, this is the place.
