The lead is Kandice Kayne, usually called Kandi. At the start, her life is quiet in a way that almost sounds like relief. She works, studies, sleeps, and occasionally notices that her life is only slightly stranger than everyone else's because a friendly ghost drops by now and then. Kandi is training to become a monster psychiatrist, which tells you right away that this world treats the supernatural as both extraordinary and oddly bureaucratic.

Then the police wake her after a graveyard shift and tell her she is a material witness to a murder. That is the moment the story tilts. Kandi is pulled out of the life she knows and shoved into the Monster Witness Protection Program, where the hidden rules of the world are no longer theoretical. They want to protect her. They also want her to work for them.

That push and pull gives the series its tone. On one level, this is an urban fantasy mystery with danger, hidden systems, and a heroine trying to stay alive long enough to figure out what is going on. On another, it is a story about someone who has been studying the strange from a slight distance and is suddenly forced to live inside it. Kandi has useful skills, but she does not get to ease into the job.

Reeves also adds a dream-thread romance element, which gives the book a slightly softer edge without turning it into straight paranormal romance. Mystery and discovery still lead the way. The fun comes from watching Kandi navigate a world where monsters have paperwork, murder witnesses need magical handling, and her own future may be far weirder than she expected.

At the moment this page is centered on the opening book, so this is best read as a strong premise and a starting point.
