The emotional core stays steady, though. Amber wants to believe in true love, but her own heart keeps colliding with what her powers seem to say.

Chicago matters here. These books are not set in an anonymous fantasy city with a Chicago sticker slapped on top. The downtown shop, the school scenes, the mayoral connection, and the mix of magical secrecy with ordinary teen life give the series its own feel. It is urban fantasy, but a light, romantic version of it, closer to a supernatural rom-com than a dark epic. There are real stakes, but the books make room for jokes, friendship drama, and the weird embarrassment of being a teenager in public.
