That clash between systems is the heart of the series. Joanna comes from a modern world of phones, offices, and code. Antryg belongs to a dangerous magical order with its own feuds, hierarchies, and old crimes. Hambly gets a lot of mileage out of the contrast. She is not just dropping a modern woman into a fantasy kingdom for novelty. She is asking what science, habit, language, and common sense look like when the world itself changes under your feet.

Antryg is one of her trickier heroes.

He is powerful, brilliant, compromised, and never entirely easy to trust, which keeps the relationship at the center of the series interesting. Joanna is equally important because she refuses to be reduced to the role of wide-eyed outsider. She learns, adapts, questions, and pushes back.

The books also widen beyond the main trilogy shape. Later stories keep returning to the Windrose universe to explore side streets, secondary figures, and odd corners where magic brushes up against ordinary life. That gives the series a looser, lived-in feeling.
