Series background & context
The Wildsidhe Chronicles is a shared young adult fantasy series about a huge group of ordinary kids thrown into a world that does not want them there. Myke Cole wrote Car Trouble, the sixth book, but the larger series is a multi-author adventure with its own continuing setting, characters, and survival problems.
It begins when roughly three hundred students go to school and are caught in a spell.
Along with fragments of their Pennsylvania town, the children are pulled into the Wildsidhe, a dangerous realm of dragons, dwarves, darkcats, Courtesans, and powerful magic. They are far from home, without the normal systems that make daily life easy. No reliable electricity. No running water. No adults with a clear plan to put things right. Getting by requires shared work, nerve, and a willingness to learn the rules of a world that rarely explains itself.
One rule gives the stranded kids a fighting chance: iron and steel can harm the people and creatures of the Wildsidhe. That means the familiar pieces of their old lives, including tools and vehicles brought across with their town, become valuable defenses. It is a practical twist that helps the series feel less like a fantasy vacation and more like an ongoing problem of supplies, territory, and keeping people safe.
The kids are the main characters as a group. Different books bring different young people forward, but the lasting story is about a community trying to hold together in exile. They have to deal with dangerous locals, rival factions, and the tension that comes from being homesick, frightened, and responsible for one another all at once. The search for a way home remains part of the background, even when the immediate crisis is much closer.
In Car Trouble, Cole turns the focus toward one of the group's most useful advantages, their cars. When a dwarf clan decides it wants a vehicle and tries to take one, a local dispute grows into a wider threat. Characters such as Miko and Wayne have to protect their resources and learn how quickly a standoff can become something larger.
This is kid-focused fantasy with real danger.
The Wildsidhe books are best approached in series order, because the premise, setting rules, and relationships develop across the earlier installments. Readers who arrive specifically for Cole's Car Trouble can still enjoy its central conflict, but it lands more clearly once the strange world, the children's situation, and the importance of their hard-won defenses are already in view. Expect portal fantasy with a survivalist streak, a large cast, and a group of young people determined not to let an unfamiliar world decide their future for them.
