Wild Country Books in Order

Wild Country is one of the best examples of Loreth Anne White's love of rough northern settings, the kind of places where distance, weather, and silence can be just as dangerous as the villain.

This is a two-book romantic suspense set in the far north, and the landscape is not just scenery. In Manhunter, the Yukon wilderness closes around Sergeant Gabriel Caruso as he tries to outrun the serial killer who ruined his life. Local tracker Silver Karvonen becomes his ally, and then his vulnerability, because the killer goes after anything Gabe dares to care about. In Cold Case Affair, White shifts to an Alaskan hometown, where journalist Muirinn O'Donnell comes back to investigate her grandfather's death and uncover a conspiracy, only to find herself relying on bush pilot Jett Rutledge, her first love and the keeper of a lot of old hurt.

These books feel cold in the best way.

The series works because White understands that wilderness suspense is really about exposure. There is nowhere to hide, not from the elements, not from your own past, and not from the person standing beside you in the snow, the bush plane, or the cabin. Gabe and Silver are hunted in a literal sense. Muirinn and Jett are stalked by memory as much as by present-day danger. That overlap between external threat and emotional reckoning is what gives the series its weight.

You should also expect White's usual interest in competent but battered people. Her leads are not glamorous superhumans. They are good at what they do, but they are tired, stubborn, grieving, or carrying some private guilt that makes trust difficult. The romance grows out of survival, not out of fantasy.

Because there are only two books, Wild Country reads cleanly and quickly, but it still has range. Manhunter is more immediate and predatory, built around the fear of a serial killer closing in. Cold Case Affair leans harder into hometown secrets, buried evidence, and the ache of coming back to a place that remembers everything.

If you like remote settings, tight pacing, and romance threaded through genuine peril, this is a very strong corner of White's backlist. It is best read in order, but each book also stands on its own.
